Leading think tank @IPPR has made an important and timely intervention in the debate on primary assessment. Their recommendations are considered, pragmatic and fair. Most importantly, they would make primary school — and year 6 in particular — a broader and more rewarding experience for our young learners.
Both @andyburnham and @LucyMPowell have said that they want to see an end to the ‘exam factory’ culture in schools. That must also include primary where the negative effects of the current system are particularly harmful to disadvantaged children and those with SEND.

In year 4, eight- and nine-year-olds spend too much time practising for the multiplication check in the summer term.
Like other primary assessments, these tests are not designed to encourage a love of learning. They exist only so the government can collect pupil data and judge schools against each other.

SATs exams dominate children’s final year at primary, with months spent cramming in English and maths and practising old SATs papers.

"Children (facing adversity) often leave year 6 with a false sense of having not met the standard when actually, if half the country was able to show the levels of resilience these children have, then they'd all be in for very bright futures."
