Not sure why there isn’t more outrage about this, unless I’ve not seen it??
I went off on this little rant in my analysis of the Reading SATs paper (link below) and SHOCK, this situation has come true

Formal exams don’t help primary school children learn and they cause unnecessary stress. We’re lucky not to have SATs in Wales.
I co-chaired a meeting with @MoreThanScore and the message from pupils and teachers was clear: England would do well to get rid of SATs.

"Perverse incentives and curriculum narrowing" - the @IPPR wants to reform SATs.
Policy of @TheGreenParty is to abolish them.

I find it incredible that KS2 SATs still exist. The cost must be huge and the educational benefit is zero (indeed negative given how the Y6 curriculum is distorted). All to produce primary school league tables of dubious accuracy.

Let’s be honest-
The rules&monitoring of SATS are crazy
No professional trust
Constant signing in &out sheets
Covering reading areas &walls!
They are 11 & will be tested in secondary in the 1st few weeks anyway-
Pointless IMO for many
it’s not really about the pupils is it?

Tomorrow, thousands of Y6 children across England sit their SATs.
But remember:
this cohort started primary school in Sep 2019.
They were just beginning school life when the world changed.
They missed normal classrooms, playtimes, routines, friendships & years of uninterrupted learning.
And yet here they are.
Still trying.
Still growing.
Before the tests begin tomorrow:
remind children that SATs measure some things but never their kindness, creativity, humour, resilience or potential.
For Y6 pupils everywhere:
we are proud of you already ❤️

What were SATs like for Jemma and her family? Do you agree the system must change?

Schools are having to retest pupils because SATs don’t show what children can really do.
After hosting an event for MPs to try the papers, I raised this in Parliament – calling for a system that builds children’s confidence, not one that adds pressure or narrows learning.

Should exams for SEND students change in schools?

Entirely agree. There's talk of education for life, but where's the time going to come from in schools forced to be #ExamFactories?
The government's Curriculum and Assessment Review has ignored the views of primary heads, teachers and parents.
Rather than reducing the burden, they want more children to spend more time preparing for government exams, including children with SEND.
What a wasted opportunity. Read our full statement.

🧵 It’s so disappointing that the government has pre-empted the outcome of its independent curriculum and assessment review to announce yet another statutory test.👇

Irony: it's an admission that the phonics, checking, KS2- testing, Ofsted-overseeing regime for Years 1-6 has failed! And the remedy is....? More of the same! More testing. What mega-brain in the DFE worked this one out? They're not education-addicts, they're test-addicts.

Where does this ideological blindness end?
More tests + arbitrary targets = higher standards is such nonsense & lack of understanding!
Never mind the fact that government themselves commissioned a review to look at these issues but are making changes before it’s even reported!
The government is set to announce a 90% 'expected standard' target for the Year 1 phonics screening check and a national reading test for Year 8 students

I’m glad my twins missed out on having to do this test due to Covid lockdowns. I remember school sent home practice tests for it and they both ended up very distressed and in tears every time they tried it (we only did it twice). If they had been at school for this test /1

I have A-grade A Levels in two foreign languages and a degree in a third, and will have used all these constructions but had little idea of what to call them. Didn't need to know, and I'm still not sure of the answer to this question.

This is so destructive and pointless for primary age children. Introducing them to the concept of grammar is fine, but testing them on it, never mind an obsession with fancy and ephemeral terminology, is totally inappropriate and counterproductive.
