Grateful to @AGKarlRacine for taking this bold and important step to rein in digital discrimination. Grateful also to @GeorgetownLaw students and fellows in my clinic who worked for two years to research these issues, propose and advocate for legislation, and support the effort.
NEW: Today I introduced legislation to hold companies accountable if their algorithms discriminate against marginalized communities. This bill is the first comprehensive bill of its kind–and I hope it can serve as a model for other jurisdictions looking to protect civil rights.

Very excited to hear the @FTC is taking action on this important issue! #FTCMeeting
My six-year-old brought home this ridiculous "consent" form yesterday. What am I supposed to do with this? Just glanced over policies of three providers on the list (of 58) and already found one that says it's "designed to be used by individuals who are over the age of thirteen."

Relatedly, here's the (equally awful) consent form my child's school sent home this past fall.

I wrote a piece explaining how use of automated face recognition by police may lead to an increase in eyewitness misidentifications and consequently wrongful convictions, and advocating for reforms to identification procedures. Check it out! papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.…

This is just tremendous news. @FTC, you are in for a treat. We could not ask for a more thoughtful, kind, and generous person to join the Commission. (And on top of those qualities, he's a deeply knowledgeable privacy expert and fierce public advocate!) axios.com/biden-to-tap-priva…

I am loath to lose such an outstanding colleague, but I guess we can lend him to the country for a while. :)

.@lauramoy, @paulohm, @ashk4n & I summarized our new @BerkeleyTechLJ essay, which argues that the FTC's approach to post-employment conflicts rules for technologists trying to do pro-consumer work is making it even harder for the agency to get, use, & keep the tech help it needs

Devastating news. Sherwin was hilarious, brilliant, humble, and kind. One time I emailed him, super upset about a work thing. He validated me, talked me down, then sent this postscript: “but...is weekend now. have beer. play with baby. play with beer, if you must.” The best.
The news of Sherwin Siy's sudden passing today is incredibly sad. A powerhouse of an intellect, a good person, and someone whose contribution to the public interest Internet is going to be sorely missed. I am a lawyer today because of how much my friend's legal mind inspired me.
