If Mohau Nkota has made moving to the Saudi Pro League look easy, it’s because homesickness is a challenge he faced and conquered before at Orlando Pirates. A story about the people who got him through it and brought out the confident kid from Kimberley: africa.espn.com/espn/story/_…

“Voting for small parties doesn’t bring change. It just lets the ANC back in.” Interesting radio ad, @Our_DA. Just wondering whether your own participation in coalition governments, including with the ANC at national level, complicates the logic of this messaging?

Yes, this version of democracy needs remodeling and changing. But dictatorship and authoritarianism will never be the answer. We need more power in the hands of the people NOT another strongman ruling over us

Deeply appreciate the way the Detroit Pistons celebrate their African talent in all departments and facilitate their stories being told. Here’s one on their new center, Ugonna Onyenso, who until recently feared his NBA dream was over. africa.espn.com/espn/story/_… @ESPNAfrica

Youth football has 1 priority, that is to develop football players not to win trophies, in my view. Seeing Rele, Mbokazi,Nkotha and many others we should appreciate the work done by this grootman. Top human being. Top coach. I respect you Joseph Makhanya🙏🏿

Lisandro Martinez’s view that Michael Carrick has been sold short and the squad has not been equipped with the depth to fight on multiple fronts is shared by several senior players - and football staff. It has been discussed in the dressing room with the club aware of frustrations around recruitment. There was a fear ahead of the campaign that the squad would not be strengthened properly - the lack of cover at left-back and striker were major concerns, which is evidenced in how much the need for reinforcements was stressed during pre-season interviews. Told the driving reason behind Martinez’s airing these grievances publicly is fury that Carrick is likely going to lose his job despite not being given the tools to have a fair crack, and players are sick of reset after reset, without questions asked of the people in charge and what direction they’re taking the club in. Carrick and the team have faced criticism, accepted it, and owned up to performances being nowhere near good enough. Where is the accountability from the people who keep leading the club to one doom spiral after another?

I’m sorry, but I can’t get behind dismissing a Constitution that protects this much. It gives us the right to challenge the government, protects us against discrimination and guarantees rights that apartheid systematically denied the Black majority. We can debate the compromises of the negotiated settlement, the economic inequality and the pace of transformation without bashing the very thing that allows us to challenge those injustices. The Constitution should be scrutinised, yes. But let’s not confuse its shortcomings with an absence of value.

The best footballer we've ever seen play kept saying 'we, we, we' in his farewell speech. Talked about the importance of the collective, the team, about how they won everything together. True leader.

I've reflected a lot this week while watching the Sibiya bail hearings. As a mother of an 18-year-old boy, this is not sitting well with me. Not because I believe the accused should be convicted before the courts have spoken. We must respect due process. But because I keep asking myself: what are we, as parents and as a society, teaching our children about power, consent, vulnerability and respect? Sure, an 18-year-old is legally an adult. But when a 59-year-old senior police official is accused of rape involving an 18-year-old, surely we must ask more than whether she is legally a minor. What does a massive age and power imbalance mean? What responsibility comes with occupying a position of authority? What conversations are we having with our daughters about consent and with our sons about respect, boundaries and power? And perhaps the hardest question: What kind of society are we becoming if our first response is to ask whether something is technically legal, rather than whether it is morally right? The courts must determine the facts and guilt. But we, as active citizens and parents, have a responsibility to ask the uncomfortable questions. Because our children are watching us. And they are learning from what we choose to question and what we choose to normalise. #ShadrackSibiyaCase #Sibiya #PowerDynamis – at Sandton, South Africa

Just a reminder: Excellent lawyers are not rude, hostile or aggressive when they question a witness. Because you can ask tough questions without being disrespectful or demeaning.

Comment: I’ve read much about Cat Matlala having a line to Shadrack Sibiya. I wonder if they ever discussed lawyers. I may not like Adv. van den Heever’s tactics but I think she’s excellent at her job. Today, Adv. Nel comes across as petty, reactive, unprepared and unconvincing.
