It's self-inflicted & predictable. Most economists & biz leaders warned that his tariffs would raise costs & invite retaliation. Regarding gas prices, from the beginning of the war Trump didn't "sell it" well enough to voters & then the communication got worse from there. Regardless he should have known the extended "ceasefire" that leaves shipping under threat from renewed attacks would cause economic damage. Trump has lied a tremendous amount about both the tariffs & the war which makes him look even worse to voters. He shot himself in the foot as soon as he made the foolish decision to launch a sweeping disruption to the economy barely 3 mos into this term. Fortunately, he backed off many of the original rates under pressure from the bond market, but damage was already done from the chaos & uncertainty, in addition to the tariffs that he left in place. There are a lot of negative repercussions from the tariffs other than the tariff cost itself, but it requires a very long post to explain my first-hand examples, so I'll do a post on that another time. Of course protectionists cherry-pick favorable data or point to one industry’s gains while overlooking that the costs imposed on everyone else are much more & leave the country worse off.
