Late-stage democracy is more descriptive than “end-stage capitalism.” What you’re seeing is a predictable failure mode of a system in which people can vote themselves more money. That’s not a failure of capitalism, that’s unrestrained democracy robbing capitalism.
I'm in my 40s. I'm a lawyer. My wife is a lawyer. We both work full time.
We cannot afford the house my parents purchased on a single electrician's income in their 30s.
We cannot afford the house my immigrant grandparents purchased on a single MTA bus driver's salary in their 30s. They had SIX CHILDREN.
For 30 years, politicians in Washington & their oligarch allies convinced regular people that this was just about avocado toast and fancy coffee.
In reality, this is end-stage capitalism. Everyone is stuck in place. It's impossible to buy a home. It's too costly to move. We work too much to have passion projects. We don't have enough savings to start our own businesses. We can't afford to go without healthcare to do it.
Thanks for writing this article @troy_closson. Would be very happy to discuss further.

"Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom...the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere."
James 3:13, 17
Finished LITTLE WOMEN and THE LETTERS OF JOHN AND ABIGAIL ADAMS and enjoyed both tremendously. Highly recommended! Now beginning Schaefer's SHANE and will re-read Chernow's WASHINGTON and, of course, THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW.
May continue sharing Adams quotes, though.
I bet they go on the same day, like Jefferson and Adams. Only without the reconciliation.

I’m very sad to hear of the passing of Walter Koenig, aka Pavel Chekov from Star Trek. I got to meet him on a few occasions, and he was always genuine, thoughtful, and a little anxious in a way that made him very relatable. R.I.P.

Note to self:
There are people who benefit from keeping people like you afraid. On making you doom.
Fear and dooming are distractions from prayer and gratitude. And it is a sin not to be grateful—especially for someone as fortunate as you are.
And you are under orders—from the highest authority there is—not to be afraid.
Never doom.

we were supposed to keep building houses like this forever and just get better at plumbing and insulation

I have a very stressful morning tomorrow. It feels petty to ask, but I'd be honored to have any spare prayers and good thoughts.
Lovely! The rich colors are perfect.

Sitting in the autumn air, soaking up the light, the smells and the shapes around me. This time, hawthorn berries caught my eye.
