“GPs threaten to stop giving flu jabs unless they're paid more.” That headline says it all. What a sad state of the medical profession. The moment you pay a doctor to deliver an intervention, you've changed why they're doing it. It’s no longer about the health of the patient, but money and income. Charlie Munger said it best - “show me the incentive and I'll show you the outcome.” Pay GPs for flu jabs and you get more flu jabs. Not more health. More jabs. Simple. Once money is on the table, the question stops being "is this good for my patient" and becomes "have I hit my target?". And it's not just the flu jab. Childhood vaccines. Statins. Beta blockers. Antidepressants. PPIs. GPs are handed targets, and if they don’t hit them, well the bonuses that make or break a practice are now on the line. Look at paediatricians in the US: Most of their practices are financially viable only because of the income from vaccines. The second financial incentives enter the consultation room, critical thinking walks out of it as does medical ethics. Imagine doctors were paid for keeping you healthy, and stopped getting paid when you got sick. I imagine we would all be a lot healthier then…
