Today, I spent time with the blind community of Luubu Village in Bukatube Sub-county, Mayuge District, and witnessed the remarkable progress they continue to make despite the challenges they have faced.
I was pleased to see them receive a milling machine donated by Grant Thornton, an intervention that will strengthen their livelihoods by enabling them to generate a sustainable income and improve their quality of life.
This visit also reminded me of how far the community has come. A few years ago, many of its members were living in grass-thatched houses. Through the generosity of donors from the United Arab Emirates, whom I was privileged to connect with the community, decent homes were constructed, restoring dignity and providing safer, more secure living conditions.
Moments like these reaffirm the importance of partnerships between government, the private sector, development partners, and well-wishers in improving the lives of vulnerable communities. Together, we can build a more inclusive Uganda where no one is left behind.

Today I joined stakeholders from government, civil society, development partners, employers, workers, religious institutions, and academia in commemorating the 2026 World Day Against Child Labour at Bugadde Primary School in Mayuge District.
The event was held under the theme, “Accelerating Action to End Child Labour: Dignity and Full Potential of Every Child.”
The commemoration provided an opportunity to reflect on progress made, challenges encountered, and lessons learned in the fight against child labour, while renewing our commitment to protecting children's rights and promoting social justice. Child labour continues to deprive millions of children worldwide of their childhood, education, dignity, and future opportunities.
In Uganda, the situation remains concerning, with about 6.2 million children aged 5–17 engaged in child labour by 2021. The problem is more prevalent in rural and poorer communities. The event highlighted the need for stronger collective action to eliminate child labour and ensure every child enjoys a safe, healthy, and productive future.
Our medical team is on site. Dr. Haji Eboga, the In-Charge Kityerera HC IV (3rd from right) and team are at Bugadde P/S, Mayuge, ready to handle any health emergencies during today’s World Day Against Child Labour event. Ensuring safety and health for all! @Moglsd_UG

The Senior Labour Officer of Mayuge District Local Government has called for increased support to scale up efforts to combat child labour in the district.
He appreciated the @EUinUG, @lutheranworld, and @AWYAD_UG for supporting programme implementation, including the development of a district child protection by-law and referral pathways to handle child labour cases, while ensuring the involvement of local government.
Despite this progress, he noted that the need remains high.
“EU-RIGHTS project interventions are currently concentrated in only two sub-counties, yet the district has 16 sub-counties. Changing community behaviour takes time,” he said.
He also commended the @Mglsd_UG for selecting @LocalMayuge to host the World Day Against Child Labour.
He called on partners to sustain and expand support to reach more communities across the district.
