AI bros talking about AI before yesterday’s election vs after yesterday’s election
The differing perceptions of AI are wild. The country just voted against data centers on 40+ provisions nationwide and hates AI. (Plenty of legitimate gripes.) But most of those people are just unaware that AI is finding a new cancer cure or treatment weekly, going through decades of peer reviewed data and uncovering mountains of errors, that its correcting, throughout every academic field. Replacing billions of man hours of drudgery. Closest thing to a “miracle” I’ve ever witnessed. When I talk to people outside of tech/VC, they’re just unaware of all of it.

Jon Stewart: "Remove that system of seniority from Democratic politics, it is a bullshit system... They're already like 'Chuck Schumer deserves a lot of credit for putting together this--' Chuck Schumer fought tooth-and-nail against half of these fucking people."

-Jefferies endorsed 5 candidates in the midterms, 2 won.
-Chuck Schumer endorsed 2 (Janet Mills, Haley Stevens) both lost, one nuked her career on camera.
I told people that you did not just elect a bunch of conservative Blue Dog corporate Dems. This is a new thing.

To spell it out: people who make 80%-100% of area median income are mostly served by market-rate housing, often older housing that's freed up by increased new supply. Every anti-supply policy hurts these ppl the most (as well as those making <80% AMI who dont win hsng lotteries)

Medicare for All is what a record-breaking 66% of Americans want, per Kaiser Family Foundation.
It would save $1 trillion and 114,000 lives a year, per Yale School of Public Health.
No more tinkering around the edges. Let’s get it done.

Too many people are missing something fundamental about these results.
Abdul El-Sayed is the first elected Muslim Senator. Ever. In American history. Even outside of the bigoted attacks, if you think that doesn’t come with its own tax in a post-9/11 USA, you’re insane.
great take
really AI should have been non-partisan like every other post-internet tech development that came before it
but the techies made the unforced error of fearmongering to pump their private market valuations and exclude the public from sharing in any real material gains in its development
to be extremely clear here - they framed AI development as zero-sum and coming explicitly at the expense of the public
and well the public has responded
personally, i think a blind moratorium on data centers is counterproductive and doesn’t address the core of the political economy issue
but i cannot blame the people (& their political representatives) for seeking such course of action when it was the techies first who posited the development of this technology at the public’s expense
in short, the techies have made their bed, and now they have to lie in it

Democrats did not sound like this before Bernie Sanders ran for president and anyone pretending otherwise is obviously full of shit

Because Bernie-style populism is now correctly understood as moderate centrism, and the corporatists who’ve been deceptively labeling themselves “moderate” for decades are actually just corporatists whose politics are being rejected by the electorate
everyone needs to stop having takes about dem ideology, it was a complete wash
A rebuke of Yglesias's anti-trans obsession. Democrats won the Kansas Senate seat for the first time in 90 years *WHILE* defending trans rights.

Adam Hamilton on transgender rights:
“I don’t think we should take a small group of people and bully them, pick on them, and hurt them. I understand one thing really clearly when it comes to transgender people, and that is Jesus told me I was to love my neighbor as I love myself.”
“I’m gonna love the trans person as well as the straight person, male or female. We have to do better than picking on small groups. What’s happened is we’ve turned a group of people into a campaign issue because it polls well.”
