When the last several Harry Potter books were released, we had midnight book launches attended by millions. Children, in some cases very young, finished these 700 & 800 page books in a single day. And now people are telling me I made it up, that this couldn’t ever have happened.
Millennials, what was considered completely NORMAL in 2005 that would be absolutely unhinged today?

A statistic that sounds fake but isn't: Not one single white American man born after 1984 has published a work of literary fiction in The New Yorker. It's not because they stopped writing. It's because The New Yorker has refused to publish them. The publishing industry has blacked out a generation of male writers & then they wonder why boys don't read.
About 70% of publishing professionals are women. Because agents and editors tend to select books they personally relate to, an increasing number of male authors are being sidelined in the publishing industry, resulting in an overwhelming number of female protagonists on our shelves—and a dearth of male ones. No wonder young men are no longer reading.

There’s this extraordinary Bret Easton Ellis podcast ep from 2021 where he talks about how he’s completely alone wherever he goes but it doesn’t matter bc he can always tinker on the novel in his head. How he can always go back to the novel. Highly recommend listening to it.
Writing a novel is such a funny thing to do. Sure let me spend three to five years making up a bunch of stuff that nobody is gonna read. That’s the ticket

On Johnny Cash and his favourite books. 'His home library was expansive, and he proudly claimed to have read every book in it - some more than once ... One of the most touching moments came when Cash was asked about 'The Grapes of Wrath.' His reply: 'Know that book? I was that book.''

Reminds me of this banger.
Aside from the fact it rots people's brains, honestly True Crime is really just quite unethical conceptually. Like I used to watch it and at a certain point I just sat down and went. Why am I listening to the worst things that can happen to a person being recounted?
