Even if you chalk it up to the Achilles recovery and believe that Jones is closer to the QB we saw in the first half of 2025, the Colts are still getting rather poor play at the league’s most important position right now.
Daniel Jones is currently 37th among QBs in total EPA, 37th in ANY/A, 38th in QBR, 37th in passer rating, 36th in Y/A, and 30th in TD passes. THERE ARE ONLY 32 STARTING QUARTERBACKS! HE IS LITERALLY WORSE THAN MULTIPLE BACKUPS! $88 million contract by the way. #fortheshoe

Even if likelihood of either is low, I think there’s a greater chance of AR “figuring it out” at age 24, than Daniel Jones now approaching 30. With Colts season already looking like it’s over (and Jones value tanking w/o Steichen likely here next year), what do you have to lose?

And yes, I know Jones’ value is already low, but if Shane Steichen is not here in 2027, there’s absolutely no reason to keep him. Whatever minimal value Jones had left becomes nonexistent.

Ideal hope was that Daniel Jones could be a placeholder for a few years, giving the Colts good starting QB play until they could find a franchise guy again. Right now, he’s not startable. Whether it’s the Achilles or falling back down to Earth, he looks like he did with Giants.

(follow up to the last tweet) I also don' t think that Steichen is going to put Richardson out there unless someone forces him to.
#Colts HC Shane Steichen says he has NOT considered a QB change because he has “a lot of faith” in Daniel Jones.

Spencer Shrader today :( He'd been so good up until this game too.

That’s what I’m talking about, Colts! Big 4th down stop by the defense, and the Colts offense complements it with explosive 38-yard JT TD run to house! Lead 7-0 with 9:13 left in 1Q.

Last thing on Ballard this week, but I don’t think there would’ve been nearly as much vitriol by Colts fanbase against him, had he just been appropriately fired ahead of 2023. They kept retaining him 3 years later. He kept coming to work, collecting pay, and doing the GM job.

I think Colts' Steichen is at crossroads, where he's either a good HC or better served as good coordinator. We've seen coaches like Raheem Morris and Spagnuolo that were better served as top coordinators. HC requires leadership, accountability, media skills and team identity.

And while I think Shane has been an elite offensive playcaller in opening drives and generally in the first half, it seems like there's some playcalling/game management issues later in crunch time. It seems like the team always plays a bit tight.

If Colts QB Daniel Jones would fetch a first round pick, Blue would be driving him in an Indy Car to the airport.
Fire Sale coming to Indy? Most likely players on the move:

$10.5M of #Colts QB Daniel Jones' 2027 salary is currently guaranteed for injury (fully vests on March 15th). Indy holds $35.2M of dead cap against a $46.8M cap figure next season.

For folks interpreting this as a pro-Steichen/Jones take: It's not. xitter.cf/LuckAtLuke/status/2112…
Here's what I think happened here: -Jones has consistently put in time off-the-field since his arrival, which is why Steichen continues to stick w/ him during these lows. -AR was not during his prior lows when starting (*that's not to say he's not now). xitter.cf/ESPNNFL/status/2111923…

I wouldn’t mind an arrangement, if he’s even up for it, with Peyton Manning as the Colts team president with a savvy GM under him doing the heavy lifting for football ops. Let #18 be the face of the org. Falcons currently have this setup with Matt Ryan and GM Ian Cunningham.

Chris Ballard should've been out in 2023, when the Colts were already bringing in a new HC and had the 4th overall pick for a franchise QB hopeful for a clean break. However, late Jim Irsay's declining health led to the Irsay daughters keeping Ballard on to lead the HC search.

For me, at that time, it was apparent he wasn't the answer. It was clear to me that he and his staff couldn't evaluate the most important QB position. Their best QB was a grizzled veteran Rivers, and after pinning Wentz on Reich, they brought in a clearly cooked Matt Ryan.

I think that was troubling part. Still wondering whether he & his scouting staff fully evaluated Ryan's 2021 Atlanta tape game-by-game, because I caught just one TNF game that year vs. Pats, and he had 'happy feet' with clearly diminished arm strength. Did they go off just name?

This Colts change felt inevitable at year-end, but kudos to CIG for staying true to her word that "stakes were never higher" and not wasting time waiting around. 2 playoff appearances, 1 playoff win, & 0 AFC South titles through 10 seasons doesn't cut it. xitter.cf/Colts/status/211217561…
We have relieved Chris Ballard of his duties as General Manager.

The Colts sit at 2-4, coming off a loss to a winless Titans team (0-5), who had lost 11 straight in AFC South, with blown halftime lead of 13-0, and franchise legends in house to honor Adam Vinatieri's ROH. It was as brutal of loss as it gets and clearly showed where we're at.
