The level of voter discontent is truly unprecedented.” Democratic pollster Patrick Toomey of New River Strategies adds that Trump has done his party few favors by dismissing voters’ concerns about the economy by pointing to indicators like the stock market rather than everyday costs. “As the 2024 election showed, no amount of telling people the economy is actually doing well can overcome their deep anxiety about how expensive their lives have become,” he said. The anchor of Trump’s unpopularity over the economy is only amplified by voters’ concern over corruption as a defining issue of this midterm cycle. In a split sample, voters in the three states were more likely to call the GOP corrupt if they were asked to evaluate “Donald Trump and the Republican Party” rather than just “Republicans” in contrast to Democrats. The change was particularly pronounced among independents.
