I don’t know what the future will look like any more than anyone else but I do have one hope.
I hope people retain their willingness to do hard things and the attention span to do them. Solving hard problems takes seriousness, focus, humility, resilience, vigilance — and sometimes beating your head against a wall repeatedly for a long time before anything interesting or fun happens. It frequently sucks.
While I’m actually a huge fan of naïveté to embark on the impossible, superficial engagement will only generate mediocrity and incrementalism. And tenacity is required when things become predictably more complicated. There’s no cheap victory to be had.
So even when complex or laborious things become much easier, I hope it supercharges our willingness and ability to think very deeply, to understand important nuance, to go far beyond surface level insights so truly meaningful progress can happen.

Our GzESTY paper is online. We optimized a cell based assay to sensitively detect GPCR activation in response to ligand application or in complex mixtures containing endogenous ligands. GzESTY was designed to aid in GPCR deorphanization efforts.

I'm excited to share our lab's newest publication on the structure and pharmacology of GABA transporter 3 @NatureComms. Much to our surprise, GAT3 adopts an inward-open conformation in complex with the (moderately) selective antagonist SNAP-5114. #CryoEM rdcu.be/ei2KY

We have innovated design of templates for CRISPR/Cas9 editing which allows efficient introduction of epitope tags in vivo. It is a simple hack which we hope to be broadly useful. Work by talented graduate student Chuanping Zhao.

He was among the most recorded drummers in jazz. In a career lasting over 80 years, he played swing, bebop, jazz fusion, and avant-garde jazz. He is considered to have been a pioneer of jazz drumming…
In this clip we see him performing a drum solo alongside the Stan Getz Quartet in 1966.

Dedicated to all my fellow scientists. It is nice when you are reassured that your gut instinct was right.
Using a Doritos ingredient is wizard level of cool. I am corroded by (healthy) envy. Time to look at the list of ingredients of Cheetos and Fritos to come up with a sequel.

Remi Janicot and I wrote a review for @MolPharmJournal @ASPET on optical biosensors for #GPCR signaling. We tried to make something useful for choosing what assays to use depending on the questions you have (I am told the link is for 100 free pdfs)
