The SEC is having one of the best seasons in CFB history. There is plenty of non-conference play left, but as of today, among 857 conference:seasons since 1946, the 2026 SEC ranks ... 6th in average #MetricsConsensus score 4th in % of the league to be ranked

A new look at the "has the G6 fallen" question ... Breach Rate asks how many G6's finish w/ a #MetricsConsensus rank equal to or better than the # of P4's? For 2026, it's how many G6's are in the top 68. The figure is 14.3% (10 teams), the lowest since 1998. 1/3

taps the "conferences are just scheduling arrangements between independents" sign
Ditching conference title games almost erases the meaning of conference titles, and they really do become simply groups with pooled media rights. If that's all they are, why wouldn't Miami, Ohio State, Michigan, etc., eventually go indie or form their own/smaller groups?

The #14 #MetricsConsensus team in the SEC is Mississippi State. Per the same measure, Mississippi State would be ... 11th in the Big Ten, out of 18 6th in the Big 12, out of 16 4th in the ACC, out of 17

By request from @LocustinSEA, #MetricsConsensus slot wins update through week 8 SEC continues to lead the pack by far, both in aggregate and as a function of opportunity. The Big Ten is still the #2 league, but that's driven by - better vs G6 than ACC/B12 - better losses

Week 7 Conference Strength Ratings The Big 12 is coming! The gap to the Big Ten is as tight as it has been in years and closing fast. There is still an elite tier keeping the Big Ten ahead, but we just saw what BYU did to an equivalently rated ND. Look out!

Maven’s projections for today’s slate 👀 Delaware and FIU are favored at home, while South Alabama gets the road nod over Marshall. Which projection do you disagree with most? #CollegeFootball

2026 Wk 9 #MetricsConsensus Ohio State jumps from #4 to #1. Alabama falls from #3 to #5. Indiana stays at #6. And BYU falls (!) one spot from #13 to #14, b/c of action behind them (Tennessee & Mississippi).

Jamey Chadwell on a potential G6 playoff: "I personally am in favor of a G6 playoff. I've been in favor of that for a while. The way the money is at P4, the gap gets wider and wider every year. I think it would be great. I would love to see that. I'm for it. To know you still have a chance, if you win your league, to go to a playoff I think is pretty cool."

Since the original post argued JMU's lack of P4 opponent against them, and Oregon State played two, let's look solely at G6 opponents. Oregon State: 1-6 UTEP, 1-6 Wazzu, 2-4 Colorado State and 3-4 SDSU. 7-20 combined opponent record. JMU: 5-1 Liberty, SDSU, 2-5 ODU, 3-3 Marshall, 3-4 Georgia Southern and 4-2 Georgia State. 20-19 combined opponent record. This isn’t a flawless way to compare schedules — opponent record can be misleading — but the entire point is that you cannot look solely at “SOS” and immediately discount what one team has won compared to the other.
JMU did schedule a P4 opponent. VT dropped JMU in January. They replaced them with SDSU given the timeline. Their OOC featured the #2 preseason PAC-12 team, the current CUSA favorite (by a mile), and UConn. Not a pushover OOC just because it lacks a “P4.”

Your unit of keasurement is wrong. Swap in "national championship implications" for "playoff implications" and you'll understand our angle. If the goal is to maximoze the number of games with playoff implications, the best # for a playoff would be 64 or 128.

Update on my Babydoll. Man I hope this encourages someone in the battle today. Thank you isn’t enough to all of you that have been praying for us. No greater gift you can give someone. Her oncologist called me Friday during our HS football game. He left a voicemail that said this, Um, the results came back stunning. Like, no tumor. I mean, it's, it's, we don't completely understand it. But give me a call and I'll explain what we think maybe going on and tell you how we resume. He doesn’t understand, but we do… GOD and PRAYER!!!! Thank you for faithfully praying! WHAT A GOD!!❤️🙌🏻

And it hurts the game of college football. College football would be far better if the extra conference game were instead a power four non-conference game. The playoff committee would have far more evidence to evaluate the quality of conference schedules. The SEC would benefit.

An interesting aspect that I think is getting left out of this playoff expansion madness is that so many fun rules have been changed in college football for the sake of "player safety" (including the best overtime rules of all time), and many cfb fans have accepted that. But now you throw in 4-5 extra games for players and don't think that's a threat to player safety? It just goes to show that the people in charge could care less about the players as well as the fans.

The thing about 24 that bothers me most is… Who is this for? It’s not because TV was begging for it. ESPN had to be convinced. It’s not for a boatload of new cash. Losing conf champ games is gonna make this a minimal gain. It’s not because the 22nd team has any shot at a natty. It doesn’t. It’s certainly not done with the health, safety, or academic success of the players in mind since they don’t even get a say in this. It’s entirely to appease the people donating the money that keeps a financially irresponsible business model afloat. It’s discounting success so schools can say “look what your donation bought.” It’s an industry hellbent on treating investors and bosses as the customer, and customers as an infinite resource that will keep coming back no matter what.

Oh look at all the qualifying teams of 2005, including all those 4-loss teams... which probably would have prevented the USC-Texas classic I shudder for the poor soul who would have to choose between GT and Iowa that year!

Biggest negatives: -Eliminating conference championships. This is America. We shouldn’t share titles or have ties. -Devaluing the regular season. (It does) *Every subsequent negative I can think of falls under this point.
