Preparedness is built before the emergency.
On the margins of #UNGA81, Africa CDC and Management Sciences for Health convened ministers and global health partners for “Beyond Panic and Neglect: The Role of Health Systems in PPPR.”
Speaking on behalf of H.E. Dr Jean Kaseya, Director General of Africa CDC, Prof. Aliko Ahmed, Special Representative to the Director General for West Africa, called for preparedness to be embedded in the systems countries rely on every day: strong primary and community health care, capable health workforces, reliable surveillance and supply chains, sustainable financing and institutions equipped to act rapidly.
Government leaders from Benin, Cameroon, Kenya, Nigeria and Somalia joined partners including WHO Africa, the Pandemic Fund, UNICEF, Gavi, the Global Fund, Unitaid and the Financing Alliance for Health.
The discussion carried a clear priority into the UN High-Level Meeting on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response: country-led health systems must remain at the centre of Africa’s health security architecture.
Africa CDC and MSH have also issued a Call to Action on PPPR, setting out practical priorities for governments and partners to take forward.

People are facing poverty due to out-of-pocket health costs, and we’re sick of it!
For governments #UHC is not a cost. It’s an investment with high returns. Every $1 invested in improving health brings up to $4 in economic growth through increased productivity and reduced disease burden.
