Ontario’s gambling review must put community well-being first. Minister @zeeinmilton points to moving players from the grey market into regulated gambling. Ontarians also deserve evidence that the government’s “guardrails” are protecting young people and reducing gambling harm. MSIFN urges the province to publish the review’s findings, strengthen protections around online gambling advertising and meaningfully consult First Nations. A comprehensive review must address the impacts on our communities and set clear timelines for action. Protecting youth and ensuring accountability must guide what comes next. On this day in 1844, Louis Riel was born. He led two resistances against the Government of Canada to defend Metis rights and identity in 1869-70 and 1885. Considered the Father of Manitoba, he was put to death in 1885 for treason. 📸 LAC

3 years later, Ontarians are still waiting for answers. ⌛ The @rcmpgrcpolice investigation into the @fordnation government’s Greenbelt land removals remains ongoing, while people who have spoken with investigators describe prolonged silence and uncertainty. The RCMP says it must protect the integrity of its investigation. For the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation, protecting land and water is a responsibility to future generations. Decisions affecting our traditional territory must respect Indigenous rights, include meaningful consultation and withstand public scrutiny. A thorough, independent investigation is essential. So are accountability, transparency and lasting protection for the Greenbelt. Read the article on @BarrieToday #MSIFN #ProtectTheGreenbelt #IndigenousRights #Accountability

Reconciliation must be more than symbolism. As Susan Byrne, former president of Oshawa’s @bawaajigewin, reminds us, September 30 carries a responsibility to learn and better understand the true history of this land. MSIFN encourages everyone to carry that responsibility throughout the year. Listen to Survivors. Learn about residential schools and their lasting impacts. Respect Indigenous rights and support meaningful action on the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action. Honouring the past means taking responsibility for what we do today.
