As we move from Black History Month into Women’s History Month, the Archives honors the achievements of Black women at MSK, beginning with Mary Brinkley.
Mrs. Brinkley joined MSK in 1947 as a laboratory aide in the Memorial Blood Bank and rose to Senior Technician. In 1957, she identified an unusual blood reaction that led to the discovery that some patients receiving high doses of penicillin developed antibodies against the drug. Working with Dr. Allyn B. Ley, she helped test hundreds of samples to confirm the finding. The research was presented in 1958 and published in Science, with Mary credited as an author, an important recognition of her groundbreaking work.
