新しく見つかった「加賀」の写真で、この部分をかなり長い間眺めていましたが、そこに何があるのか、どうしても分かりませんでした。ところがある日、突然ひらめきました。これは大型の救命筏ではないかと思います。
3枚目の写真をご覧ください。艦の中央部に、まさにこの筏が写っています。つまり、私が何か新しいものを考え出したわけではなく、この筏は最初からそこにあったのです。しかし、1935年の近代化改装後の左舷側を写した写真は非常に少なく、あっても画質があまり良くないため、その存在が見落とされ、どの図面にも描かれず、模型にも再現されてこなかったのだと思います。
これも「加賀」に関する小さな発見の一つで、その姿をさらに少しだけ正確に再現できるようになりました。
ここで皆さんに質問があります。寸法を計算してみたところ、14フィート×9フィートという結果になりました。カーリー式救命筏にもこのサイズのものがありました。
日本海軍が独自の救命筏を使用していたという資料はあるのでしょうか。それとも、これは実際にイギリス製のカーリー式救命筏なのでしょうか。

Battleship Littorio under Allied bombs during Operation Vigorous in june 42. The presence of the Italian battlefleet at sea eventually caused the Mediterranean fleet to withdraw and not a single ship from Alexandria reached Malta.

On this day in 1955: Majestic-class aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne (R21) was commissioned.
HMAS Melbourne (R21) was a Majestic-class light aircraft carrier that served in the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) from 1955 to 1982. Originally laid down as HMS Majestic for the Royal Navy in 1943, she was purchased by Australia in 1947 and completed with modern carrier technology, including an angled flight deck.
Although she never saw combat, Melbourne played a supporting role during the Indonesia–Malaysia Confrontation and the Vietnam War. She became infamous for two fatal peacetime collisions with allied destroyers: HMAS Voyager in 1964, which killed 82 personnel, and USS Frank E. Evans in 1969, which killed 74 American sailors. These tragedies, alongside other accidents, contributed to her reputation as an unlucky ship.
Decommissioned in 1982, Melbourne was eventually sold for scrap in 1985 and towed to China. Before dismantling, she was studied by the People's Liberation Army Navy as part of a secret aircraft-carrier development programme and reportedly used to train Chinese naval aviators in carrier flight operations.

「この情景(ホーネット)を写真に撮れ」

「夜ですから写真では無理です」
「では写しをとっておけ」
この旨を航海長から言われた臼井信号長は、艦橋休憩室から航跡自画機の用紙を持ってきてくる。
臼井信号長
「中島、貴様は絵が上手だから写生しろ」
中島斎信号兵は描いてみるものの、煙や炎の動きで艦体がはっきりしない。
艦長
「どうだ中島描けそうか」
「ちょっと艦体の横腹が陰になって細部が見えません」
「なるべく接近するか、いや探照灯で照らそう。探照灯照射用意」
あまりに大胆すぎる出来事に戸惑いを隠せない中島に艦長は言う。
「大丈夫だ中島、心配するな、探照灯で照らせばはっきり見えるだろう」
(私は見えない事を心配しているのではない。探照灯照射はあまりにも危険ではないかと心配しているのである)
「はいわかりました。」
中島はそう答える以外に返事のしようがなかった。
艦長は大声で命令。
「探照灯照射はじめ、左九十度」
何も知らされていない乗組員は何か起きたのか、と驚く。
