No, he didn't, but why care if he did? It's as objectionable as yelling at Macklemore. Like journalism, art becomes less capable of influencing people the more it's tied to an ideology. The fewer demands people put on it, the better it gets

Hatfield didn’t need to virtue signal about not making political statements

I don't care if a metal/rock act makes a political statement. I'm against the idea that an artist MUST do this.
Replying to @mtaibbi
Matt is the actual metal guy by getting upset when an artist criticizes the US President or Israeli policy

Doctor Zhivago was banned in the Soviet Union and Pasternak expelled from the Writers’ Union, while Master and Margarita was suppressed for decades and even Shostakovich was denounced as a formalist.
Replying to @mtaibbi
Symphony No. 7 (Leningrad), “Come and See,” “The Master and Margarita,” “And Quiet Flows the Don,” “Doctor Zhivago,” “The Motherland Calls,” “The Stone Flower.” I mean I’m a staunch anti-comm but am honest enough to admit they had beautiful art and design.

Muted for “silence the masses.” I think you mean “wielding.”
in a just society, Art sits on a pedestal. but until ALL peoples of this earth are free, art will remain a weapon of the resistance!! & anyone weilding art to numb, distract, or silence the masses is an enemy to future generations ✊🏻✊🏼✊🏽✊🏾✊🏿

No one is saying artists can’t be political. It’s just absurd to insist they must be political.
nina hartley was very expressly political and came to guest lecture in college classes regularly

I’ve stood up for you repeatedly on speech grounds, even on this issue, so - thanks, that’s gracious of you. Who’s the Mona Liza?
I always suspected Matt Taibbi actually was a useless idiot. And now he’s come clean. Who’s more important Matt? The Mona Liza or Hind Rajab? Matt scratches his head. Ok Matt, The Mona Liza is a painting, Hind Rajab is our sister.

If you mean the Mona Lisa, it’s not an either/or question. Strange that you pose the question that way - why would you have to choose? How does a painting get in the way of your cause? Interesting also that you chose that painting as an example, because one of the things people love about the Mona Lisa is that they’re never sure what the smile means, but find it beautiful anyway. You’re right, what’s the point of that?

ART IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN POLITICS From Swift to Moliere to Dostoyevsky artists have been warning for ages that being Very Sure to the point of claiming to know how other people should behave is a 100% predictor of jackassery: open.substack.com/pub/taibbi…

"It does not matter to Motley Crue if you're a Republican. It does not matter to Mtoley Crue if you're a Democrat. It does not f****ing matter if you're gay or straight or if you're going right down the center of the lane in life, because we're all in this together—can we agree?!" 🤘🤘🤘

So, silence is violence. Got it
“We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.” -Elie Wiesel (Holocaust survivor and Nobel laureate):

Master and Margarita was only published by the Soviets in a heavily censored version in 1967, followed by a slightly less mangled version in 1973.
Replying to @OrkSoapy @mtaibbi
The master and margarita and Shostakovich were pretty subversive, but hid it very effectively
