I will never forget the Muslim family i knew at my school when i taught
Three kids
All sweet as can be
Two girls and a boy. The boy was the middle child
Taught them all. I even tutored the boy at his house because they lived in my apartment complex
The mom was always so sweet. She would offer me traditional Arabic deserts and snacks. Dad was not very interactive, but cordial
I knew them for 6 years (from when the oldest daughter started Kindergarten)
They were model kids. The oldest was so smart and would help other kids with schoolwork because she was always further ahead than the other kids
I tutored the boy when he was in 2nd grade
When the boy was a 4th grader, he got in some major trouble because there was a jewish kid in his class and the teacher found a note that the muslim kid had written
It was full of the most disgusting and vile hatred towards the jewish kid
Vulgar language and violent threats
It was clearly taught at home
But it blew my mind, because that family was literally the model family
Like i said, dad was slightly stand offish, but he always smiled and thanked me for teaching his kids
I had absolutely no reason to expect their son would think like that about another kid
But in hindsight, when i think of their smiles (the parents), i think of the way Mamdani smiles
Practiced, but inauthentic
Because the mouth can lie, but the eyes can't
There is a hateful gaze that can't be hidden by a practiced smile
Muslims aren't the only ones that do it. You see it in "mean girls" or other inauthentic people, but it's there and once you learn to recognize it in people, you'll notice just how often it pops up
It broke my heart when that happened with that family. I still love all those kids and when they have seen me over the years, they still run up to hug me
But that changed my world view in a major way because it's not an isolated incident
It's common practice in Muslim culture
And it sucks, because it preys upon the decency and trust of others
America has always gotten a bad rap and so many people try to drag American ideals through the mud
But the reality is the whole world has been dying (literally) to come to our country for decades upon decades
Even in the midst of some of our worst moments as a country, people could come to the United States and make a life, feel welcome
Our hospitality and openness is unrivaled
Everyone knows this
But it has been abused
That's where the term suicidal empathy comes from
Empathy is a fantastic quality and no country in the world has more of it
How do i know?
Because no other country in the world has even come close to matching the amount of humanitarian aid that our country has given to the rest of the world over the last 100 years
But America is being taken for granted and even worse, America is being attacked from within and without
We must recognize the abuse
