Partner preferences for resources adapt to income and gender economic inequality. When women make more money than men, the sexes are equally inclined towards hypergamy. New from the Evolution Lab. (1/15)

If you even imply lookism is bad, people assume you must be ugly. Lol.

I think it’s good to help people look their best and it’s bad to call people ugly. These are two very normal perspectives that do not contradict one another in the slightest.

I’ve noticed that the “men’s fashion” community tends to mock tight-fitting or revealing menswear. This strikes me as intrasexual competition against gym bros. You can either have a physique, or make it gauche to show off a physique.

Speed-dating research finds that facial attractiveness is the strongest predictor of romantic interest over height, income, and education level (Asendorpf et al., 2011). In the study, after a 3-minute date, participants chose whether or not they wanted to see that person again.

"While it does make evolutionary sense that on average women tend to prefer somewhat older men (this is consistent with preferences for mates with greater resources), based on the mere fact that women tend to live longer...it might make more sense for women to date younger men"

Clavicular rates Elvis as below-average. This illustrates the core limitation of these made-up looksmaxing “harmony scales.” They attempt to calculate beauty directly from cephalometric measurements, even though cephalometry is just one of many contributors to beauty.

Lads: you’re not remotely horny. You’re fixing a shelf, ironing or watching TV. Your girlfriend/wife sighs loudly, says “Can we have sex now?” in a whingy voice and grabs your ass. How do you react?

Notice that the woman’s reaction depends entirely on the strength of the man’s mandible? Not a coincidence. Dixson et al. (2017) found that men with small jaws look substantially better with facial hair coverage.

You write this like it’s a strategic error on the part of women rather than a classic sexual asymmetry found in nature. Most males are not “baseline sexually attractive” to females. There aren’t enough hot men to go around.

This tweet will be used as a slide in powerpoint presentations on failures of cross-sex mind-reading.
Ok lads: imagine you aren’t horny at all. Not even slightly. You’re busy fixing a shelf or ironing your suit or watching your favourite TV show. Zero sexy feelings. Your girlfriend sighs loudly and goes “can we have sex now” in whingy voice and then grabs your ass. She then sulks and starts whining when you aren’t instantly aroused and into it and starts saying you haven’t had sex for 3 days. Annoying? Not very sexy? GOOD YOU UNDERSTAND WHY PASSIVE AGGRESSIVE INSTA-HORNY BEHAVIOUR IS ANNOYING

There’s actually a follow-up, here, where the failure is shown to go even deeper. Upon pushback, she assumes that most men must be imagining they have a dolled-up celebrity girlfriend to make the scenario work in their minds. But I imagine this scenario is appealing to most men even with their very normal girlfriends and wives.

Ok more context: your girlfriend isn’t Sydney Sweeney in lingerie. She’s Katie who works in Costco and she does not smell good. She’s been wearing the same unwashed sweatpants for a three days and she’s scratching her public hair and wiping snot off her chin.

A large part of male retroactive jealousy is because they wish to be desired like women are. Secretly men want to be wined and dined for just existing and resent women for it.
I would imagine that the “psychological cue of irresistibility” would be similarly, if not more, intoxicating for the male sex. But my guess is that most men live and die without ever being irresistible.

Hopefully, I’m wrong. Maybe most men get to experience the feeling of being “irresistible” at some stage, within a long-term relationship. But that pulling-folks-from-across-the-room kind of desirability does not appear to be something that many men experience.

New study: Women are most attracted to men who are 13-14.2% bodyfat. (Examples around 1:08 in this video.) Makes sense, from an evo psych perspective. This is a "goldilocks zone" where men are at once healthy, formidable, and unlikely to starve anytime soon.
