Lookism is such a socially acceptable form of bigotry that people forget it’s bigotry.

This is somewhat consistent with our own research (Grandas et al., 2026). We found AI rates older people as less attractive and women higher than men. But we found no strong evidence of an ethnic or racial bias. arxiv.org/abs/2609.02512
TikTok also scores how attractive you are, guesses your age/gender, and calculates your mood with some of these on-device models.
I pulled them out of the app, so you can try it directly here: ayoships.com/tools/tiktok-fa…
I ported them from ByteNN so they run in your browser. My tests showed significant negative bias against darker skin and older faces.

The face, however, remains the strongest predictor of romantic interest (Asendorpf et al., 2011).

A large part of male retroactive jealousy is because they wish to be desired like women are. Secretly men want to be wined and dined for just existing and resent women for it.

Can hitting shrugs at the gym change your perceived parenting ability?
According to research by Brown and Tracy (2023), it can. Men with large traps were perceived as more able to protect their children but less effective at nurturing them.

Our biggest customer nearly destroyed my startup today
He wanted to upgrade to a €2,000 per month plan
Normally this would be amazing news
But we receive a €180,000 EU innovation grant for companies with less than €100,000 in annual revenue
His upgrade would put us over the limit
I called him immediately
“Do not send any money” I shouted
The client was very confused, so I did the only thing a great CEO would do
I personally introduced him to our biggest competitor
They signed a lifetime contract that same afternoon
In Europe, the best way to grow is to decrease revenue

If you ask AI to rate your face, it will say you’re somewhat-above-average, regardless of how you look.
This may be a generalizable phenomenon. Perhaps AI learned to say things that are flattering-but-believable. (E.g., ask it your IQ it will tell you 130, not 80 or 150.)

Do freckles make you more attractive?
Our science team recruited 953 participants and ran a study to test this. We found mixed results; freckles made some faces look better and others look worse. Overall, the effects were very small (but small effects add up).

Griffin and Langlois (2006) report an "ugly is bad" effect: relative to average-looking people, the penalty for being unattractive outweighs the premium for being attractive.
Although much is said about the halo effect, its reverse seems to deserve more attention.

All over the internet you’ll see made-up “facial harmony scores” touted as scientific measures of beauty.
But if you actually read the scientific literature on facial attractiveness, harmony is a side story.
This is what actually makes a face attractive.

Do women care more about a man's face or his height?
In experiments, it's not close.
Photo attractiveness is ~12x more important than height on a dating app (Witmer et al., 2025), and facial attractiveness is ~3x more important on a speed date (Asendorpf et al., 2005).

Hitsch and colleagues (2005) found a surprising “superstar” effect of male beauty, whereby the top 5% of men experienced a disproportionate leap in desire.
Improving your looks as a man always helps, but counterintuitively, it may help the best-looking men the most.

Our latest research, covered in PsyPost.
Artificial intelligence is surprisingly good at ranking human beauty, but a new study finds it systematically overrates facial attractiveness. The findings suggest that AI might be too polite to be an objective judge of our looks. dlvr.it/TVd1Hq
