Many thanks to Dr. Hezron Makundi, @iusiri, and everyone who joined us at our Resource Centre in Dar es Salaam and through Zoom last Friday to discuss lessons from Tom Eisenmann's book "Why Startups Fail: A New Roadmap to Entrepreneurial Success". In the book, the author takes an unconventional path. Rather than studying success stories, he examines why promising startups collapse, from early-stage pitfalls such as choosing the wrong partners, skipping proper market research and relying on false promises, to later-stage traps linked to speed, scope, financing, staffing, structure and shared values. He also guides founders on how to recognise failure, wind down responsibly and move forward. Drawing on his research on innovation hubs and clusters, Dr. Makundi noted that while the book's core principles apply everywhere, Tanzanian entrepreneurs face their own realities, including limited and costly access to capital, regulatory hurdles and the need for stronger support ecosystems. Sharing his experience as Co-Founder of Ramani, @iusiri emphasised that choosing the right market is a founder's most important decision.
