For some reason this reminds me of Steve Martin happily playing his banjo.

🧠 Unlike AI, the brain has no external designer! New research from MIT's McGovern Institute reveals that artificial neural networks can build their own learning machinery using simple local rules (like "neurons that fire together, wire together") instead of engineered back-propagation. By utilizing self-assembling motifs, these randomly connected units successfully organize into functional circuits capable of image classification and pattern recognition matching conventionally trained models—marking a major leap toward biological plausibility in AI and understanding brain plasticity! 🤖✨ news.mit.edu/2026/how-artifi… #Neuroscience #ArtificialIntelligence #MachineLearning #ComputationalNeuroscience #BrainPlasticity #MIT #PNAS #NeuroAI

50 yrs/$80 billion of #Alzheimers research a collosal flop producing no diagnostic test/no effective treatment. Now getting silly- pushing 19th century superstition head shape predicts destiny. We must spend more on better care/less on fountain of youth. nytimes.com/2026/10/22/scien…

I fully agree with this: looking after our mental health and psychological development goes beyond the individual; while it certainly requires personal effort and work, it is, in essence, a collective undertaking.
The self-care or self-help movement flourishes on the myth that atomised isolated individuals are able to transform themselves in the absence of social, material and relational supports. And when when the project inevitably fails, it pronounces you only have yourself to blame....

I fully endorse this statement by @StanDehaene: there is no legitimate distinction between two kinds of consciousness ("access vs phenomenal consciousness", the first related to easy questions and the later related to the hard question). What we experience is what we access.

This is what billionaire ownership of the media means: Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta shut down the No Kings account for hours during the height of their protests. Meta suppressed accounts supporting Brazil President Lula da Silva in the recent election. Larry Ellison’s TikTok blocked advertising for a documentary criticizing Elon Musk. Fight back. Defeat oligarchy. Preserve democracy.

Musk sounds like Trump. Both might proclaim their brilliance but not their unconscionable greed.
Delta Air Lines has chosen not to go with Starlink, and Elon Musk is upset. Musk said that Delta’s CEO would “lose his job” for snubbing Starlink. Elon Musk quietly becomes biggest known donor in midterm contests as he tries to save Republicans. nytimes.com/2026/10/09/busin…

Meta suspended the No Kings Instagram account in the middle of No Kings Day for 90 minutes. Bunch of fucking fascists!

The Braak Paradox: When Parkinson’s pathology and clinical progression disconnect. For more than two decades, the Braak hypothesis has shaped how we think about Parkinson’s disease, suggesting that abnormal alpha-synuclein pathology spreads through the brain in a predictable sequence as the disease advances. What resonates with me about this new study by di Biase and colleagues, and the accompanying thoughtful editorial by Rodríguez-Violante in Neurology, is that the biology may be far more complicated than the model. In 61 people with autopsy-confirmed Parkinson’s disease, Braak stage did not correlate with motor disability, disease duration, age at death, or brain weight. In other words, having more widespread alpha-synuclein pathology did not necessarily mean having more advanced clinical disease. The editorial importantly reminds us that this finding does not invalidate Braak staging or the importance of alpha-synuclein, but rather exposes the limitations of using pathology as a clock for clinical progression. Parkinson’s is not one disease following one predictable path, and the frequent presence of other pathologies, including tau, amyloid, and vascular disease, further complicates the picture. For me, the lesson is that we must be careful not to confuse what we see under the microscope with what patients actually experience. As we develop biological staging systems, biomarkers, and disease-modifying therapies, we need to measure not only abnormal proteins but also neuronal loss, clinical disability, and the individual trajectories of people living with Parkinson’s. The patient, not the pathology, must remain at the center of our science. neurology.org/doi/10.1212/WN…
