Does the @nytimes know that Tolkien fought at the Batttle of the Somme in WWI where the British took 57,000 casualties in the first 24 hours?
At the end of the offensive over 1 million men were killed, wounded, or missing.
Seems like this article is inaccurate 🧐

President Reagan said it so well: “Voting is a precious right that for two centuries Americans have fought and died to protect. Let's all honor that sacrifice this election day. Whether you're Republican, Democrat, or Independent … show that you care about America's future and get out and vote.”

A Pre-Nicaean witness to the Trinity.
This is the Oxyrhynchus Hymn, dated to the late 200s AD. It is the earliest known Christian hymn manuscript with both lyrics and musical notation. A plain English rendering of the surviving words:
“Let all creation be silent.
Let the shining stars be still.
Let the rushing winds and rivers cease.
While we sing to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,
let every power answer: Amen, amen.
Strength, praise, and glory forever to God,
the only giver of all good things. Amen, amen.”
The industry’s woes aren’t just Beijing’s problem. Desperate for customers, Chinese carmakers are piling into overseas markets with hypercompetitive products developed in a market where workers are paid a fraction of European and American wages. Although Chinese carmakers generally can’t sell their vehicles in the U.S., the five largest players grabbed a 11.7% share in Europe in September.

The very first grants from the new Vince Dooley Battlefield Trust Fund have been awarded, marking a new era of historic preservation in the Peach State. The fund, named for the legendary University of Georgia football coach, historian and tireless preservation advocate, awarded two grants totaling $945,475 to support ongoing preservation efforts by the American Battlefield Trust to save more than 300 acres at Resaca Battlefield, with many other sites soon to follow. battlefields.org/news/inaugu…

Today in 1917, a U.S. Army gun battery on the Western Front near Bathelemont, France fires the first American artillery shells of the First World War. It's a token gesture; the bulk of the United States' contingent to France won't be ready for major action until mid-1918.

We stopped building ships here at home, and as a result, we’ve become too dependent on other countries for our commercial shipping needs. It’s time to build American ships again.

You may not have heard of Limoges; it’s the 30th most populous city in France. It’s one of those corners of Europe that has tons of history — going back to the Romans — that most tourists visiting the country never get to see.
Limoges’s town hall — Hôtel de Ville — was inspired by the city hall in Paris, with construction beginning in 1879, and it opened in 1883.
The town hall building was a key location for the French Resistance:
"During the German occupation of France, Limoges Town Hall became a stronghold and a key center of Resistance activity in the southern unoccupied zone. Lucien Berdasé, head of the military affairs office and later the census bureau, became an indispensable ally to the Resistance. His efforts were wide-ranging: he sabotaged lists of Jewish residents, issued fake certificates for departures to Germany, hid weapons stored at the Town Hall, forged birth certificates, and established a regional network for producing false documents. He also provided safe passage and travel permits for Maquis (resistance fighter) vehicles, with the support and complicity of Laporte, the prefecture’s secretary-general. Suzanne Rodi-Boyer, who oversaw food ration card distribution at the Town Hall, also contributed to the Resistance by creating false papers for Jewish families using stamps stolen from the municipality."
