MLA for Calgary-South East

Calgary, Alberta
Joined January 2019
Serving Albertans as a Minister has been an honour and a privilege.   Earlier this year, I informed the Premier that I will not be seeking re-election and have asked to step back from Cabinet to support an orderly transition. I will continue to represent and serve the constituents of Calgary-South East at this time.   I continue to support Premier Smith and the United Conservative government as we work to ensure Alberta remains the best place to live, work, and raise a family. See my full statement below.

Congratulations to Lorne Doerksen @LDoerkson on becoming the next Premier of British Columbia. Alberta and British Columbia share strong economic ties and common interests, from trade and energy to transportation and economic growth. I look forward to working with Premier designate Doerksen on shared priorities and advancing the interests of people in both provinces, including unleashing Canada’s potential as an energy superpower. I also want to acknowledge David Eby @Dave_Eby for his service as Premier. While we did not always see eye to eye, I appreciated the opportunity to work together on issues important to both provinces.

Today I spoke directly to Albertans following yesterday’s referendum vote. Alberta will remain in Canada, and for as long as I serve as premier, there will not be another referendum on the issue of separation. I’m also pleased that Albertans also gave our government a mandate to take greater control over immigration, to ensure temporary residents pay their share of the services they use and to require proof of citizenship to vote. Those reforms are coming, and they will strengthen Alberta’s autonomy. Now is the time to move forward not as a people divided by how we voted yesterday, but as neighbours, friends, Albertans and Canadians. Together, we will keep Alberta and Canada forever strong and free.

Unofficial Calgary-South East referendum results as of this post: - 76.7% voted to remain in Canada. - 60.8% voted to require proof of citizenship to vote in provincial elections. - 56.6% voted to support the Government of Alberta taking increased control of immigration, with a focus on sustainable immigration levels, prioritizing economic migration, and ensuring Albertans have first access to new employment opportunities. These results provide clear direction as our government considers its next steps and reflect many of the conversations I have had with constituents over the past year. What has not changed is my commitment to the issues that matter most to Albertans: creating jobs, improving affordability, strengthening health care and education, enhancing public safety, and delivering sustainable public services. Regardless of how you voted, thank you for participating in the democratic process. Behind every vote is a person, and we must never allow politics to reduce our family members, friends, neighbours, and fellow Albertans to a single political position or vote. Together, Albertans have built the most prosperous province in Canada. Together, we can help make Canada the most prosperous country in the world while continuing to assert Alberta's priorities and interests. After all, a strong Alberta means a strong Canada.

Today you have a ballot in front of you. “Yes to the Nine” means Alberta gets a real say over our own immigration, so growth matches the housing, schools and hospitals we have to support it. It means temporary programs contribute to the services they use. It means constitutional reforms that protect this province's authority no matter who sits in Ottawa. Vote today. ✅ Vote for a stronger Alberta within a united Canada. ✅ Vote yes to the nine.

Alberta is mourning alongside the Canadian Armed Forces and the families, friends and colleagues of those affected by the tragic incident at Canadian Forces Base Wainwright yesterday. The loss of life and injuries are heartbreaking. On behalf of the Government of Alberta, I extend my deepest condolences to the families who have lost loved ones and wish those who have been injured a full recovery. Our thoughts are also with the military personnel, families and colleagues facing uncertainty and grief during this incredibly difficult time. We are deeply grateful to the first responders, paramedics, physicians, nurses and hospital teams across Alberta who have mobilized to provide care to those injured. Albertans should all be incredibly proud of their frontline health care workers and our acute care system that has managed this mass casualty event. We’re also thankful to our neighbours in Saskatchewan who did not hesitate to support our response with additional air ambulance capacity, and to other provinces who have reached out offering their support and condolences. I will be traveling to Edmonton today to meet with provincial ministers and federal officials. The Government of Alberta continues to work closely with the federal government and local authorities. We have convened our Emergency Management Cabinet Coordination Committee and the Provincial Emergency Coordination Centre (PECC) has been activated to a level 3. As a mark of respect for those who have lost their lives and in solidarity with the military community and their families, flags at provincial government buildings across Alberta will be lowered to half-mast. In the days ahead, our thoughts will remain with everyone affected by this tragedy. Alberta stands with the Canadian Armed Forces, the people of Wainwright and all those grieving during this difficult time.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the families, friends, and loved ones of the CFB Wainwright personnel affected by this tragedy. We are also keeping the military community in our thoughts and are deeply grateful to the first responders and hospital staff providing care and support during this difficult time.
We are learning of a significant and tragic fire at CFB Wainwright today that is affecting many of our brave military personnel. Alberta’s government is in close contact with the Government of Canada and Prime Minister Mark Carney as this situation evolves. Thank you to the first responders and all those providing care and support to those affected.

Devastated to learn about today’s tragic bus collision in Calgary. Deepest condolences to the families and friends grieving the loss of loved ones, and our thoughts and prayers to those injured. Thank you to our first responders and health care professionals for caring for those in need.
Heartbreaking news out of Calgary this afternoon. A serious collision between two buses has left multiple people dead and many more injured. My sincere thoughts are with the families of those who died and with everyone injured. Our first responders were on scene within minutes and are still working. I thank them for their immediate response, and thank the doctors and hospital staff who are now caring for these patients.

Another major energy project is moving forward in Alberta. Premier Danielle Smith and I have issued a joint statement celebrating the groundbreaking of the Yellowhead Pipeline — a project that will strengthen Alberta’s natural gas network and help unlock billions of dollars in new investment. The nearly 200-kilometre pipeline will add more than 1 billion cubic feet per day of natural gas delivery capacity, create approximately 2,000 jobs during construction and help enable more than $20 billion in investment by ATCO customers. 23,100 more Albertans went to work last month than the month before. Since I was first elected in 2022, this province has added 305,000 net new jobs. Behind every one of those numbers is a person who got the call, a family that is growing stronger, and a paycheque that goes further here than almost anywhere in Canada. Alberta is working. Let's keep it that way.

After collaborative discussions with Alberta’s government, the federal government announced two very qualified judicial appointments for Alberta. To our knowledge, this is the first time in decades we’ve witnessed truly non-partisan cooperation on judicial appointments between a Liberal federal government and a Conservative provincial government. It is a clear indication that the federal government is beginning to treat Alberta with more respect and as an equal partner. Well done by all.
I would like to congratulate Justice Thomas Rothwell on his appointment to the Court of Appeal of Alberta and to Justice Malcolm Lavoie on his appointment to the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta. Both individuals bring significant legal experience, a deep understanding of our province and a strong record of service to Alberta’s justice system. Justice Thomas Rothwell served as law clerk to the Honourable Mr. Justice J.C. Major at the Supreme Court of Canada and was the Assistant Deputy Minister of the Legal Services Division at Alberta Justice prior to his appointment to the Court of King’s Bench of Alberta in 2020. Justice Malcom Lavoie was appointed Deputy Minister of Justice and Deputy Attorney General of Alberta in 2024. He has argued several cases before the Supreme Court of Canada. Alberta’s government welcomes the federal government’s willingness to meaningfully collaborate on these judicial appointments. This constructive approach represents an important step forward for provincial involvement in future appointments to Alberta’s superior courts. The highest levels of Alberta’s justice system should reflect Albertans and the province they serve. We maintain that greater provincial involvement would strengthen public confidence in the administration of justice. Our government looks forward to continuing our collaboration with the federal government while hearing from Albertans about the future of judicial appointments in our province.

Over the past few months, endless Albertans have told us the same story. They saved for years to buy a single family home on a quiet street. They picked that neighbourhood on purpose, because of the park at the end of the block or the school two streets over or the neighbours who watch out for each other. Then one morning the house next door came down, with no notice, and later a 16 unit complex went up in its place, with nowhere for anyone to park and no consideration for the neighbourhood. Those are not complaints. They are people describing the place they built a life in with their family. So today we are acting. Edmonton will return to the density and height rules that were in place before 2024 and common sense minimum parking requirements, utility and water infrastructure considerations are coming back. Calgary will hold the line it set when it repealed blanket rezoning. Both cities will take a hard look at their bylaws and come back with something more balanced. Alberta needs more homes. We are building more of them than almost anywhere in Canada. But a home is more than a house, and a neighbourhood is more than a supply of lots.

Today, Alberta doctors voted 76% in favour of our new agreement, showing overwhelming support for what we can accomplish when we work together. More doctors are choosing Alberta than ever before, and we’re keeping that momentum going. In fact, since our government formed in 2019 over 3,180 net doctors have registered in Alberta, bringing the total to 14,661. We’re building a province where physicians want to practise, build their careers and put down roots, and where Albertans can get the care they need, when and where they need it. This new agreement with the Alberta Medical Association is another important step toward that future.

Alberta’s government has removed the fuel tax, saving Albertans 13 cents a litre at the pumps. Visit websites like GasBuddy @GasBuddy to track prices across the province. There are gas stations in Calgary under $1.40 today, and travelling a few blocks can mean real savings for your family, especially if you’re filling up a truck or minivan! 🛻🚙
