Speaking at @serauk event at Lab Conf, @vickihird calls for increases to the nature friendly farming budget to be prioritised after a summer of heatwaves and an autumn of SFI woes - 'what is more important than food and water?'

At More in Common event at Lab Conf @CraigBennett3 calls misinformation claiming bats block growth 'the bendy bananas of our time' & welcomes early signs of Burnham Gov moving away from this. 'Time now for good signs to become good actions - starting with a bigger farm budget'

Encouraging to see Gov considering proposals for powerful Regional Water Authorities, led by elected mayors to add political weight to local river restoration efforts. This could be a trailblazer for how devolution can deliver for nature and people. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cmgr…

'The solution to raging wildfires is not more burning of our countryside. It is to restore and better manage our environment.' Great to see this evidence-led approach from the Secretary of State
The wildfires and drought we've seen this summer show how our climate is already changing. Other parties may refuse to accept the need to adapt to this new reality. But as Environment Secretary I will rise to the challenge👇 theguardian.com/commentisfre…

The Habitats Regulations have become a Westminster Piñata, which politicians hit in the hope that growth falls out. Today’s report from The Wildlife Trusts sets out why this approach is flawed - and how much the regs do for us👇 wildlifetrusts.org/sites/def…

Welcome action to clear up illegal waste. Good to see a Government recognise that regulations are not 'red tape' - they protect people and nature, and enforcing them properly makes places better

Rewetting and rewilding our vast uplands, and restoring herds of hardy native cattle and especially ponies is the surest pathway to wildfire resilience. The current sheep-wrecked, scorched earth approach is not working and is depressing af. (By me) spectator.com/article/rewild…

Good to speak to Sky News about pollution from illegal waste, and the risk it poses to wildlife, as well as people. Important also to recognise that when politicians bash 'red tape' they are bashing the regulations & enforcement designed to protect us from such threats.
'These illegal tips are threatening our rivers and the wildlife that lives within them.' The Wildlife Trusts' head of public affairs @MattRCBrowne speaks to @skysarahjane, following @danwnews' investigation into toxic chemicals found at illegal dumps trib.al/WwlNdcD

Reminder: the project is five years late primarily due to piping, cabling and system integration delays on both reactor units. Without the fish disco it would still be £17billion over budget.
Reminder: Hinkley Point C (7% of Britain's electricity needs) is at risk of delay due to Natural England's view that the £700m on fish mitigations isn't enough. samdumitriu.com/p/natural-en…

Record June heat. 1,000+ school closures. Flash floods damaging homes. At 4pm MPs vote on the Carbon Budget. The timing isn't ironic - it's the whole argument. #CarbonBudget7

(1) The usual disingenuous analysis from Britain Remade/Britain Robbed by corporate lobbyists. As the Lovegrove Review makes clear, the ‘gold plating’ that doomed the project wasn’t environmental, but gold plating of the concept of highest possible speed.
No one is saying the £125m bat tunnel alone is the reason HS2 costs north of £100bn. But, along with HS2 specific big issues (route, speed), it is a perfect example of a system wide problem. Gold plating, process over outcomes, legal risk and delay increase costs at each stage

(3) If the Gov had listened then we could have now a capacity boosting, bat-tunnel avoiding, in budget HS2 HS2 shows ignoring environmental & social considerations leads to more trouble further down the line. Factoring them in early leads to better projects (eg Channel Tunnel)

(4) HS2 also shows precisely where build baby build politics leads – lots of money for lucky companies & their lobbyists, long term costs for the public.
