The world has lost a giant in the field of comic art scholarship and freedom of expression. Dr. John Lent was not only an esteemed professor at Temple University and a dedicated member of #Cartoonists_Rights_Network_INternational, but a truly kind soul.
Knowing and learning from him began in 1999 at the Tehran Cartoon Biennial. Meeting him there was a turning point, and his dedication to our community was always deeply inspiring.
Thank you for everything, John. You will be missed by colleagues, cartoonists, and friends across the globe.
I'm so very sorry to hear this. I only met him in person once, but Dr. Lent was very generous in his reviews of my work. His journal IJoCA was a real labor of love and highlighted often-marginalized comics-studies scholarship.
US journalism is notably weaker now than even a year ago: public media federal funding rescinded; Pittsburgh Post-Gazette closing; billionaire-owner eroding news independence (WaPo, LA Times, CBS) & now massive WaPo layoffs. Those in power know that our watchdogs watch less.

No struggling newspaper ever saved itself by becoming a worse and less essential product. But what's happening today at the @washingtonpost is not just the latest devastating contraction of the news industry; it's the gutting of an American institution vital for a healthy society

This year has had the highest layoffs since 2020.
If you take away 2020, it's the highest number of job cuts since 2009.

Republican billionaires now control every major social media platform, Fox News, CNN, WaPo, WSJ, CBS, and 200 local news stations in 100 markets.
They are creating a propaganda state that treats their misinformation as fact, and actual facts as conspiracies.
This is by design.

Welker’s idiotic question just shows you how the media expects Democrats to be role models for Republicans, while Republicans are allowed to get away with anything.
Welker: Part of your tactic is to imitate some of what we see online from president trump. So you mimic his all-cap posts. You send out similar memes. Do you run the risk of normalizing that behavior?
Newsom: Quite the contrary. The whole expression was to not allow it to be normalized. It was becoming normalized—the normalization of deviancy across the spectrum of issues, but his communication -- he's dressing up as the pope, as Superman. He's putting his face on Mt. Rushmore. It's madness. So I put a mirror up to that madness.

They’re literally shouting it out loud! Their plan to overturn the constitution and democracy. They’re not hiding it. They’re bragging about it.
And the media are just ignoring it, or worse normalizing it; the biggest story perhaps in modern American history.
