State of play on election eve: The polling environment reminds me very much of 2020, when I spent a lot of time on @glennbeck show pointing out how far off from history and traditional election metrics they were. I said many times back then, “Joe Biden may win but it won’t be like (fill in the blank poll) is claiming (with specifics).” And I was right. 2020 remains the worst year in the history of the RCP polling average. An election confidently forecasted by the polls to be a blowout, but was all time excruciatingly close. And that’s if you even buy the outcome, which I didn’t then and I still don’t now. But at least with the scamdemic, the most traumatic event for the country since 9/11, there was a legit reason to forecast such a historical outlier. Things could (need to) be better in America, but this is not 2020 levels of suffering or even close. Nor is it even close to 1974 with Watergate and gas lines. Nor are we bringing home body bags of Americans dying for nothing in Iraq as we were in 2006. 1974 and 2006 are the two most dominant midterm victories for the Democrats in my lifetime. And yet these polls are forecasting that level of environment. However, in 2020 Trump himself was on the ballot. And he is a far better salesman for our base than the GOP is or even tries to be all too often. He is not on the ballot this time, and never will be again. So we can’t count on a similar reverb. I think the truth is somewhere in the middle. The polls will be overinflated, again. But we won’t get the full benefit of Trump being on the ballot for us, either. I’m thinking 2022 but in reverse. Democrats get a win, but not the magnitude confidently expected.
