“You take the victim and make the victim the perpetrator.” I hear versions of this argument a lot but it doesn’t make any sense. No category of person is fixed through history as one or the other. Many (most?) have taken a turn as both victim and perpetrator depending on context.
“To accuse the Jewish people of genocide is wild.”  Broadway icon and Nobody Wants This star Tovah Feldshuh gets real with Jonathan Harounoff on UNSCRIPTED, on acting, marriage, the global rise of antisemitism, and what she says about the genocide accusations against Israel. Full episode drops Monday, October 26 on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Podcasts.  Production support provided by the @cjewishhistory, @AmericanSephard, Noff Media, Odd One Out Studios, @JewishNewsUK, and Leah Barzideh.

To take 1 of countless examples, impoverished Irish people (who’d suffered famine, penal laws, land expropriation under British rule) fled to the US and wound up getting recruited off the docks to fight in the Indian wars. Yes this is 🤯 but it’s also human history.

This is actually a condescending view of working-class people. I grew up in a working-class immigrant family and we ate at Red Lobster and The Cheesecake Factory for "fancy nights out." But even we understood that the White House should not look like the inside of a Red Lobster. Working-class people are not culturally illiterate just because their experiences are shaped by their limited means.
Does Obama not understand that to most Americans the Cheesecake Factory is a very nice and fancy restaurant?

“I think that a sort of discursive shift in how we talk about Palestinians’ right to defend themselves needs to happen.” @infinite_jaz Yes & long overdue but still very far. Ask a 2SS proponent how they imagine Palestinian military, borders, airspace. newyorker.com/news/q-and-a/b…

The camp leaders also said: we can show you the graves. And we drove with them through a dusty field on the outskirts of the camp to the site where they bury the dead. Graves like these are the true measure of DOGE and the new US humanitarian model. /end

Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood just doesn’t work coherently in U.S. discourse. There are too many layers, too much history, a lot of terrible & paralyzing aspects, also a sincere mass reaction to terrible repression & search for something better. These exchanges are stupid.
Q: Will you disavow the Muslim Brotherhood? El-Sayed: Yes. Why are you asking the question? Do you assume that I wouldn’t? Q: Yes, because I have not heard you disavow them yet. El-Sayed: Have you disavowed them? I have not heard you disavow them yet.

Living for years in Egypt under Mubarak and reporting extensively on the MB when it was still an enormous grassroots outlaw party, I don’t think you can erase either its virtues or its menace. I don’t think you can reduce it to either a political movement or a religious ideology

And from @GovMikeHuckabee ? Levine is a US citizen. So far, 🦗🦗🦗
To be clear: Some facts are neither in dispute nor unclear. Our photographer was clearly marked as Press. She was clearly beaten. These are not partisan or risible statements, but indisputable. We urge a thorough investigation and accountability.

If these psychopaths kick and beat a journalist so viciously while being recorded, what do you think happens to ordinary Palestinians when there’s nobody filming?

They know Americans are not as cruel as our government — they won’t release the report on bombing schoolgirls or livestream an execution before midterms.

“The failure to use our leverage.” Perhaps Harris can explain why she failed to use *her* leverage as #2 in the world’s most powerful government administration during a time when Israel killed 75,000 people in Gaza and a genocide case was well underway at the ICJ.
Kamala Harris says her and Biden’s administration should have acted “sooner and more forcefully” regarding Israel’s attack on Gaza — and that the Trump administration “offers Netanyahu a blank check”: “America has at times fallen short on [moral obligation to human rights and international law]. Most recently, the failure to use our leverage to curtail the Israeli government's horrific conduct in the war in Gaza, both under the current administration, which offers Netanyahu a blank check, and our administration before, where we should have acted sooner and more forcefully.”

Yes, I understand the formal role of the VP. She is meant to be a key advisor of great influence. She also has a huge public presence and had every chance to make her views known. Not least when she ran for president and clearly said she was in lockstep with Biden on Israel.

If she wants to have a real discussion about Gaza and stake out a different position, she will have to do better than this vague, milquetoast critique which is framed as if it had nothing to do with her. She’s only managed to anger supporters of both Palestinians and Israelis.

Also, if I were the Democratic Party, I’d prevail upon Harris not to soft launch her campaign just before the midterms with Ds polling so well. For many voters, both left and right, she’s a reminder of unpopular party views/terrible moments.
