โA Memory Worth Keeping.โ
โShirley had made up her mind.โ
On the memory unit, mornings usually began with coffee, soft music, and the quiet shuffle of residents finding their way to breakfast. This morning, Shirley had other plans.
She gathered her things, her favorite sweater, a small stack of canes sheโd been collecting from the hallway racks, and a pillow with her name that rattled with something hard, and announced she was moving into Johnโs room.
I asked her why? She said, โLisa Pizza, his eyes like to wander,โ and thatโs what she told anyone else who asked. She said it the way someone might explain a broken applianceโฆโsimple fact, nothing to be done about it.โ
John, for his part, didnโt seem to mind. He sat in his recliner with a calm, slightly confused smile while Shirley rearranged his nightstand and lined the windowsill with the canes, tips all pointing the same direction like a small wooden fence.
I arrived before breakfast, announced, Lisa Pizza is here. I am her power of attorney, the one who signed the papers and restocked the drawers and tries, gently, to keep things from tipping too far into chaos.
I attend every care plan and doctorโs appointments. Shirley was abused, and I rescued her. Thereโs no blood relation.
She stood in the doorway of Johnโs room and took in the sceneโฆShirley perched on the edge of the bed, John nodding along to a story only Shirley fully understood, and the memory-foam topper I had bought for Shirleyโs own bed now neatly covering Johnโs mattress. He said I let her all me, โAlfred.โ
โI spent a lot of money on that bed,โ I said, half-laughing, half-resigned.
Shirley looked up, unbothered. โLisa Pizza, thatโs too bad. It breaks my back. Itโs too stiff.โ She patted the foam. โThis oneโs better. His is better.โ
I checked the closet next and found half of Johnโs clothes, the worn flannel shirts, the soft pants with the frayed hems, anything Shirley had decided was past saving.
Sheโd thrown them out during the night, efficient as always once she got an idea in her head. The remaining hangers looked sparse. I locked the closet door on my way out, already making a mental list of what would need replacing.
Later, while Shirley napped in Johnโs recliner with one of the canes resting across her lap, I found the paper bag. Inside were several sets of dentures, carefully wrapped in napkins. Ugh. Good thing they had names on them.
Shirley had been collecting those too, tucking them away โfor later,โ though she never explained later for what. The staff had started calling the bag Shirleyโs treasure chest. I tucked it back under the chair where Shirley liked it.
By evening, Johnโs room looked different, more of Shirley in it than had been there at breakfast. The canes were still lined up. A few of her photographs had migrated to his dresser. The foam topper stayed.
When Shirley woke, she surveyed the room with satisfaction and told John his eyes could wander all they wanted now; sheโd be right there to keep track of them.
I told her if sheโs a nag he will break up with her. She said, Hussy, every man loves a bossy woman!โ I told her they donโt like that. She replied, โIn my day, we had to look after our man, because thereโs a lot of hussies that like to do tricks!โ
I stayed a while longer, listening to Shirley describe the improvements she still planned. There would be more canes, she said. Maybe some of the nicer pictures from the activity room. John listened, nodding at the right moments.
Outside the door, the unit settled into its usual late-day quiet, but inside the room the two of them kept talking, the way people do when theyโve decided, for whatever reason that still makes sense to them, that this is where they belong tonight.
Never a dull moment with Shirley.
I bought John a new wardrobe. Itโs all locked up.
As I drove away, I prayed for all the residents suffering from Alzheimerโs and their families.
