Mountain lion cub triplets, suspected to be orphaned, were recently rescued by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (@CaliforniaDFW) thanks to the support of #specialdistrict @MidpenOpenSpace staff. At just three months old, the cubs are too young to survive alone. With help from Midpen rangers and biologists, the cubs were transported to the Oakland Zoo (@oakzoo) for care while experts continue monitoring the area for their mother. This rescue is a testament to the challenges mountain lions face and the importance of Midpen’s work to protect wildlife in the greater #SantaCruzMountains region. Thank you, Midpen!

The #CherrySpringsVMP in Sierra Azul Open Space Preserve has been cancelled for today. The burn will be reevaluated tomorrow, 10/25/24, after consulting with #BAAQMD. We will continue to work with @MidpenOpenSpace to ensure a safe and effective project.

One of the oldest Least Terns to enter care at Bird Rescue: This 23 years old bird – aged thanks to a leg band – arrived in very poor condition. We provided food, fluids, and heat in the hopes he would improve. 😢Sadly he ended up passing overnight.

ALT We always try to give every bird a second chance, but sometimes life has other plans. We were glad that we could provide a safe and quiet space for this Least Tern to spend his last moments. California Least Terns are federally endangered. This species was one of the first to receive federal protection after the Endangered Species Act was passed in 1973. Encountering a 23-year-old tern is remarkable. Who knows how many children and grandchildren this bird sired in the wild, contributing to species diversity, aiding conservation for his kind.

Female pink glowworms (Microphotus angustus) light up the summer night with a green glow. The females never morph into beetles, but rather into "larviform" (larvae-like) adults. The males have wings and large eyes, which they use to find mates; they glow dimly, only under duress.
