Our study shows that ocean currents can shelter coral reefs during major El Niño heatwaves. How did this happen…? By enhancing upwelling and delivering valuable nutrition to corals during peak thermal stress. [1/5]

Oh look, we did something cool with algae and found something neat out about their metabolism;) This work is by @Mauricio_M 1st Auth, collaboration from @MikeD_Fox @KAUSTCoreLabs and @ASU_AzCATI (Prof. Lammers). Thanks to @MarsGlobal for the chocolate waste!
KAUST researchers have developed a new method to convert chocolate-production waste and CO₂ into C-phycocyanin, a high-value blue pigment used in food and cosmetics.
Using chocolate samples provided by Mars, the team demonstrated how local waste streams can support scalable, low-cost biomanufacturing and advance Saudi Arabia’s circular economy.

The best part? This perfect suite of oceanographic conditions has occurred during each of the 3 major El Niños of the last 50 years…and these conditions likely help other reefs survive - so now we’re working to find them. [5/6]
