I still sent it. My friends thought it was the strangest thing they’d ever heard. I told them he was just weird about money. That was 11 years ago. Last spring, I found a small house I loved. Two bedrooms. A crooked porch. A lemon tree in the yard. I was $18,000 short on the down payment. I mentioned it at Sunday dinner, trying to sound casual. “It’s fine. I’ll find another one.” He didn’t say anything. He just kept eating. Then he said, “Pass the salt.” I thought I’d disappointed him….
