Using MRA to clear mycoplasma from cultures of apicomplexans because all other products kill the apicoplast? Our summer student Darlene Malave-Ramos from @uprm & @Molecular_Kit found you can safely use Sparfloxacin, which is 20,000x cheaper. tinyurl.com/2p8e9yed

Today marks 25 years since we identified the apicoplast, a relict plastid in parasites of humans and animals (PMID 8632819). Apicoplasts are the target of the widely used antimalarial doxycycline, which has saved many thousands of lives.

Can you teach an old drug new tricks? We love that azithromycin kills the malaria parasite apicoplast, but it acts too slowly to be a great antimalarial. @amyburns39 & @Wilson_LabUofA found tweeks that make it work both 'fast' and 'slow', so yes you can.
