I’m told Perry Mehrling has passed away. His money and banking course at Barnard was hugely formative for me and many others.
This is an awful year for social thought. And I’m afraid we’re not producing many people of that caliber who can fill the ranks.

Very sad news. Great thinker and great teacher. Perry Mehrling's Money and Banking course remains one of the best courses available online, well worth studying: archive.org/details/academic…
We are deeply saddened to share the news that Perry Mehrling passed away this morning at the age of 67.
Perry was the father of the Young Scholars Initiative. He believed profoundly in young scholars, in their ideas, and in the importance of creating a community in which they could learn from one another and find their own voices.
Perry, you leave an enormous hole in our midst. Our hearts are aching, and we will miss you dearly.
The YSI community will carry your legacy forward. Your ideas, your generosity, and your commitment to generations of young scholars will remain with us.
Thank you for everything, Perry.

Terribly shocking and sad. Perry interviewed me for my current job a very long time ago and was my colleague and department chair for many years. One of the most original scholars I have known.

Perry Mehrling has sadly passed away.
"Money is nothing more than a form of debt, which is to say a commitment to pay money at some time in the future. The whole system is therefore fundamentally circular and self-referential."

Today's economics Nobel to Michael Woodford and Robert Hall rewards the intellectual foundations of modern central banking. The problem is that several of those foundations look increasingly shaky.
