Russia sells death. Literally.
“necronomy” (death economy)
Yes, this bloody war must be stopped. And to stop it, we must make the cost of war for Putin higher than the cost of peace.
What “poor Russian conscripts” is he talking about? The Russian soldiers fighting against Ukraine serve under official contracts and are paid for it. Their salaries are funded in part by the extra money Putin is receiving as a result of Trump’s recent decisions to waive some of the sanctions on Russia.
And now, something very important.
Russia pretends to be “great,” yet it is a very poor country. Its entire economy is comparable in size to that of the U.S. state of Texas. Millions of Russians live in economically depressed regions. For them, signing a contract with the Russian army is often the only realistic path to social advancement, because it lets them earn the kind of money they could only have dreamed of in their impoverished home regions.
The families of Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine are perfectly satisfied. They receive sums of money that their husbands or sons could never have earned, even if they had worked for the rest of their lives.
That’s why our Russian human rights colleagues call this kind of economy a “necronomy,” meaning a “death economy.” Russia sells death. Literally.
Yes, this bloody war must be stopped. And to stop it, we must make the cost of war for Putin higher than the cost of peace.
So if Musk truly cares about the lives of Russian soldiers, America must break the Russian necronomy’s ability to fuel this bloody war. But the Trump administration has done exactly the opposite. America has begun to finance it.
I am attaching to this post just a few examples of Russian state advertising, showing the amounts in rubles for which “Russian kids” go to kill Ukrainians.

“Nothing is worse than war”, they say, rightly so. But then they add “So, why don’t you give Putin what he wants and end it?” And this is where they don’t understand: giving Putin “what he wants” means sacrificing to him millions of people. It means seeing your loved ones disappear in Putin’s torture chambers. It means putting an end to Ukrainian nation who wanted in this life nothing more but to be free. It means feeding the beast.
Which puts the whole “nothing is worse than war” premise in a different light. It’s “nothing is worse” as long as the sacrifice isn’t yours.

Trump is lying again. Putin started the war and has repeatedly refused to negotiate to end it. The US spent nothing like $350 billion. Half the money is not missing. Washington and Moscow are both significantly more corrupt than Kyiv. Putin, not Zelensky, is a dictator who openly steals elections.

If Putin stops fighting, the war ends. If Zelensky stops fighting then his country will be occupied, leaders murdered, language banned, businesses stolen, children kidnapped. That's what happens in Russian-occupied Ukraine.

When Ukraine destroys Russian data centers, hoards of aggressive right-wing bots disappear, and Twitter becomes much friendlier. Isn’t that interesting? So much of our politics is driven by the internet, and so much of the internet is driven by Russians who want to hurt us. Shouldn’t we do something about that, given that we know it?

Ukraine’s journalists are doing far more than reporting the news. They’re saving lives, defending democracy and holding communities together under round-the-clock Russian bombardment.
