Their knowledge of the terrain and their fierce determination to avoid re-enslavement made them particularly dangerous adversaries to slave-catchers and military expeditions. Many achieved positions of leadership and influence, with figures like Abraham serving as chief counselor to Seminole leaders. Their military prowess and strategic importance elevated their status beyond that of typical slaves, creating a relationship with the Seminoles that resembled vassalage more than chattel slavery. The transfer of Florida to the United States in 1821 threatened this freedom. American slave-catchers immediately began raiding Black Seminole settlements, claiming these free people as property. The U.S. government pressured the Seminoles to surrender black members of their communities, but both groups refused, recognizing that their fates were intertwined. This resistance became a primary catalyst for the Second Seminole War (1835-1842), America's longest and costliest Indian war. General Thomas Jesup acknowledged in 1836 that "this is a negro war," recognizing that Black Seminoles fought with special ferocity, knowing capture meant enslavement rather than mere relocation. During the war, Black Seminole leaders like John Horse coordinated resistance and negotiated with American forces. The conflict cost the United States an estimated $40 million and over 1,500 military deaths, with Black Seminoles forming the backbone of Seminole guerrilla operations in the Florida swamps. Despite eventual defeat, many Black Seminoles escaped to the Bahamas or were deported to Indian Territory (Oklahoma), where they continued fighting to maintain their freedom and identity. Others fled to Mexico in the 1850s, establishing settlements where their descendants still live today, preserving a unique Afro-Seminole culture. The Black Seminole story remained largely absent from American history textbooks until recent decades. Their resistance demonstrated that enslaved people would fight relentlessly for freedom when given the opportunity, directly challenging the paternalistic mythology that justified slavery. They proved that interracial alliances could successfully resist American expansion, a narrative that contradicted both pro-slavery and anti-Indian ideologies. Their military success forced the U.S. government to negotiate rather than simply impose terms, a rare achievement in 19th-century Indian relations. Today, Black Seminole descendants maintain distinct communities in Oklahoma, Texas, Mexico, and the Bahamas, preserving traditions that blend African, Native American, and Spanish influences. #archaeohistories

THIS MORNING! His ears cut off. Beaten. Shot in the back. Stabbed. This morning, cattle farmer Donovan Marx was viciously attacked on his farm between Potchefstroom and Ventersdorp in the North West. He was severely beaten. His ears were cut off. He was shot in the back/shoulder (doctors were still trying to remove the bullet) and stabbed in the leg with a sharp object. He’s fighting for his life in a Potchefstroom hospital. A family member left the farm shortly before 8am. Attackers then struck. A farm worker was tied up but managed to free himself and raise the alarm. The attackers fled in Marx’s truck. They’re still free. VF Plus says the full details of the torture are so disturbing they won’t even publish them. This is not “ordinary crime.” This is the same pattern of extreme brutality; ears severed, severe beatings, shootings, stabbings that has been targeting White farmers for years. English media is already silent. No front-page outrage. No presidential condemnation. If the roles were reversed, it would dominate news for weeks.

FARM ATTACK: Another South African farmer attacked and brutally tortured on his farm this week. Cattle farmer, Donovan Marx, from the North West province, had his ears cut off on Wednesday morning during a farm attack. This gross coverage disparity between the Afrikaans and English media when it comes to farm murders is what makes it possible for so many politicians and commentators to get away with their disgusting farm murder denialism. You know what's even more infuriating? History and research shows, if the victim was black and the torturers were white, we would see this story on every front page and news channel for weeks. Debates, panel discussions, political party statements - the works! The president would even come out and condemn the attack. Again, I refuse to accept the twisted, psychopathic standard that dismisses a farmer having his ears cut off as "just normal crime."

My uncle did a mission trip to Africa to teach a village how to raise pigs for food. They flew in with a bunch of pigs, built pens for them, Food and water troughs, and taught them how to breed them so they could always have meat. Two weeks of work and teaching. They went back a year later to check on the village. They had thrown a giant party the night after my uncle left, slaughtered and ate all the pigs, sold the feeders and fencing, and were really pissed off that the mission didn't bring them more pigs.
