I've posted a new story at my blog. A really neat urban archaeology site that protects the remanants of the Union Coal, Iron & Transportation Company’s massive iron & steel factory that closed in the 1930s; you can also access the 7-mile I&M Canal Trail. tinyurl.com/y7zbvcxj

Pope Leo XIV celebrated Mass at noon on Friday in the room set up on the 10th floor of Gemelli Hospital, according to the Holy See Press Office. Several members of Gemelli's medical and nursing staff attended the Mass, along with members of the Vatican City State Gendarmerie Corps. "In his homily, the Pope thanked all the staff—doctors, nurses, and orderlies—for the work they do every day caring for patients in their frailty, and especially for what they have done and continue to do for him," read the statement.

Good news! The # of visitor views to my blog Nature in Chicagoland reached 125,000. Although this # probably matches the # of views the NYT gets hourly, I’m proud to have reached the milestone. So, on to 150,000... & world domination-or something like that natureinchicago.com

Pope Leo XIV has said his doctors have found “a localized nodule” in his lung and will operate in a few days. Speaking at the Angelus on Sunday, he said the nodule was “detected at a very early stage and is well localized.” The Pope added that his doctors recommend surgery and that he will follow their advice, with the surgery scheduled for the coming days. Pope Leo thanked everyone for their spiritual closeness and entrusted himself to our prayers. “Dear friends, during some recent medical examinations, doctors found a localized nodule in my lung. It was detected at a very early stage and is well localized. The doctors believe surgery is appropriate. Following their advice, I have therefore decided to undergo an operation to remove it. The operation is already scheduled for the coming days. I thank you for your spiritual closeness and entrust myself to your prayers.” vaticannews.va/en/pope/news/…

Michigan lost a quiet giant this week. Margaret Hamilton, who grew up in the Upper Peninsula and graduated from Hancock High School, went on to lead the team that wrote the onboard flight software that put Apollo 11 on the moon. When the guidance computer was overwhelmed in the final seconds of descent, the system she and her team built kept the landing on track. In 2016, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and across her life she showed generations of women and girls that they belong in science and technology. From the shores of Lake Superior to the surface of the moon, Margaret Hamilton expanded what we believe is possible. Our thoughts are with her family and all who loved her. May she rest in peace. nbcnews.com/news/obituaries/…

Good news
A new law supporting journalism jobs in California will provide local news organizations with tax credits for each journalist they employ. This is fantastic news! The U.S. has lost 80% of its local journalists since 2002. --TNG

I love it when something ugly and industrial is returned to a beautiful natural state. What is now Marian R. Byrnes Natural Area (2200 E. 103rd Street, Chicago 60633) was once an industrial eyesore. But no more. Check out my article to learn more. tinyurl.com/yckxpc3z #birding

17 seconds of nature bliss at Marian Byrnes Natural Area. It's hard to believe that this site is located in Chicago but the city's southeast side has several restored nature areas such as this. I'll be publishing my article about this Jeffery Manor gem tomorrow. #chicago #birding

Had a great time last night seeing @emoenmusic at FitzGerald’s with some good friends. She's an amazing singer, and her band and guest musicians (including Reilly Downes) were fantastic.

Pope Leo to Artists; “We live in the age of search engines that offer us thousands of instantaneous answers. Yet, no matter how powerful they may be, they merely return what already exists and tend to give us what we already want. In the age of technology and consumerism, the great danger is not only censorship but also homogenization, and not merely imposed silence but the noise that makes it impossible to listen. Art is a different kind of ‘search engine,’ It does not proceed by indexing but by inquiry.”

A phenomenal moment in the Senate. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., claims he has evidence Jack Smith went to a HAWKS game in Atlanta. Smith denies it. Schmitt declares he has busted Jack Smith for perjury. Smith, vexed, says he went to HAWKEYES game in Maryland. Watch the whole thing:
