🚨 Germany’s firewall is still preventing the AfD from entering government but it was never capable of extinguishing the political fire behind it.
The deeper failure is that mainstream parties have:
🔹copied the AfD’s language and made immigration the test of whether government is succeeding;
🔹left industrial decline, regional inequality and demographic collapse largely unanswered;
🔹formed awkward coalitions defined principally by opposition to the AfD;
🔹allowed the AfD to enjoy the authority of winning without ever having to reconcile its promises with budgets, law or reality.
🆘 Merz’s tougher migration policies have validated the AfD’s diagnosis and encouraged voters to choose the original rather than the imitation.
⚠️ This is the warning for Britain. Labour cannot defeat Reform by repeating Reform’s framing while preserving the economic conditions feeding public anger. It needs to offer visible material change: growth, housing, functioning services, regional investment, secure work and an end to the Brexit damage through the single market and customs union.
The firewall is necessary but without economic renewal, it becomes little more than a cordon around an ever-growing fire.

My appeal to PM Burham @andyburnham on fairness & economic growth.
'None of this is easy, and none of it is free. But fairness never is, and neither is growth....It starts with the money – and it needs to start now.'

In my latest article for @prospect_uk, I reflect on what it feels like when politics changes your sense of belonging.
My piece also explores how both Britain and Germany have shifted their debates around immigration, and asks a broader question:
Can societies continue to ask immigrants to integrate while simultaneously making them feel like strangers in the place they call home?
I’d be grateful if you gave it a read, and I’m interested to hear whether others have experienced something similar.
