If any of y'all are interested in my academic work, I upload all of my publications onto this page. Also sharing because I think some of my haters just think I am full-time Twitter libtard NGO aunty. I am that, but a little more too. 😉 lums.academia.edu/NidaKirman…

The college counselling industry is so troubling. As if elite private education wasn't exclusionary enough. Rich kids don't need extra help getting ahead, & non-elite kids (the VAST majority) don't need more hurdles by having to compete with those who can pay to get a leg up.
Abolish the CCD!
A CCD official booked for allegedly raping a woman at gunpoint and recording it.
The woman had gone to a police station to report a stolen phone.
Following the alleged assault, her FIR was initially not even registered.

We just want our brother back.

Extrajudicial killing is the very opposite of justice. It is a complete failure of those institutions created to uphold the law. No one should rejoice in this.

“This case demonstrates an epic failure by the police in their investigation,” the judicial commission report on Mir Raza murder case said.

The story of Naseer's life and tragic death, which could have been easily preventable had he lived elsewhere, captures the multiple layers of deprivation faced by so many people in Balochistan. Extremely painful to read. @HazaranRahim thecontrapuntal.com/no-road-…

A scorpion sting killed 16 year old Naseer in Mand Balochistan. His family endured five checkpoints & a five hour journey on the disastrous Mand–Turbat road only to find Turbat’s hospital had no treatment for the venom and referred him to Karachi.

Alhumdulillah! Today Sindh High Court bench headed by J. Shamsuddin Abbasi dismissed an appeal filed by Sindh Govt against acquittal of @MahrangBaloch_ from ATC Karachi in a case registered with PS Quaidabad.
Alhumdulillah! The Learned Anti-Terrorism Court-V, Karachi has acquitted BYC Leader @MahrangBaloch_ in FIR No. 654/2024, P.S. Quaidabad.
The FIR had been registered under Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act; Section 124-A PPC (sedition, despite the provision being ultra vires); Sections 148 PPC (rioting), 149 PPC (unlawful assembly), 153-A PPC (promoting enmity between groups), 500 PPC (defamation of public officials), and 505 PPC (statements conducing to public mischief).
The FIR alleged, inter alia, that Mahrang Baloch was affiliated with multiple terrorist outfits, promoting their activities and recruiting for them, misleading youth, promoting enmity against the State, and acting against the national interest.
The acquittal exposes, at several levels, the maliciousness with which the State acts against Baloch voices, as well as the failure of civilian institutions to timely ensure their fundamental rights.
The complainant, who made these false allegations, was himself an accused in three FIRs at the same police station and was used as a pawn. Police powers were abused, as the police were compelled to submit a challan against Mahrang despite there being no evidence. The prosecution was pressured to pursue the trial without any lawful basis. The judiciary kept Mahrang Baloch entangled in a bogus case for 13 months, even though both the High Court and the Supreme Court could have ended this harassment many months earlier when we filed a petition for quashment and then an appeal.
This acquittal further fortifies the concerns of rights activists across Pakistan regarding State oppressions and claims of mala fide on the part of the State in relation to the multiple FIRs registered against BYC leaders in Balochistan, their ongoing incarceration, and their proscription under anti-terrorism laws—both as individuals and as an organization.
We are extremely pleased to have represented the BYC leadership as counsel and to have assisted in their just political struggle for the rights of Balochistan and the Baloch people. I would like to acknowledge my associates Rana Daniyal Akram, Jai Pal Jai, and Luke Victor Patrick for their able assistance in all proceedings arising out of this FIR before the Trial Court, High Court, and Supreme Court.
Khurram Husain’s piece on the real motives behind Governor Raj in #Pakhtukhwa exposes the central irony of Pakistan’s current political-economic moment. The federal government’s fiscal desperation is being weaponized to dismantle provincial autonomy under the guise of security and technocratic efficiency.
The most damning aspect of this setup is how it quietly rolls back the 2018 FATA merger without needing a formal constitutional amendment.
The Area Representative and Development Councils (ARDCs) comprised of tribal elders selected through local jirgas, the DC has to function exactly like the old Political Agent and a federally managed Area Development Secretariat (ADS). (Same old FATA)
Then appointing Administrator with the powers of an ACS for these 12 frontier and southern districts are presented as fresh innovations. In reality, they merely recycle old bureaucratic patchwork, echoing earlier provincial setups, such as when the PTI government appointed Abid Majeed as ACS South alongside his role as Home Secretary to oversee a parallel framework.
Instead of bringing the merged tribal districts into the mainstream of provincial governance as promised, the Centre has done the exact reverse. It has exported the legal and administrative "state of exception" from the former FATA to the entire province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
When raw military or executive control becomes too politically costly to justify on its own, the state defaults to technocratisation. By replacing an elected provincial executive with a compliant, 11-member technocratic Advisory Council, Islamabad achieves two goals at once: it neutralizes a hostile political base and reclaims financial leverage over a resource-starved borderland, even as it leaves the underlying fiscal deficit and regional grievances completely unaddressed.
The emergency in KP is ultimately rooted in a growing perception in Isb/Rwp that Pakistan's federal structure is too expensive and needs to be changed. I trace the growth of this perception over the years in my piece in Dawn today.
