Inspired by her mother’s care as an OR nurse, Dr. Emily Marcinkowski knew by the time she was 8 years old that she wanted to be a doctor. She spent countless days and nights at the hospital, not as a patient, but alongside her mom during shifts and emergency cases. Whether waiting in the nurses’ lounge or drawing on the chalkboard that listed the next day’s surgical schedule, she was immersed in the world of healthcare from the very beginning. Over the years, her dream evolved from neonatologist to anesthesiologist, and by 11, she was set on becoming a surgeon.
That passion led her through years of training, including general surgery at UNC Chapel Hill, cancer research focused on triple-negative breast cancer and angiosarcoma, and a Complex Surgical Oncology fellowship at City of Hope in Los Angeles.
After she attended her first Tumor Board, she was fascinated by the collaboration in the room. "All of these experts talking about one patient at a time and formulating a unique plan just for them. How cool is that?"
The experience sparked her interest in surgical oncology and the opportunity to build lasting relationships with patients. She was drawn to helping people navigate some of the most difficult moments of their lives and considered it a privilege to walk alongside them throughout their journey.
Along the way, Dr. Marcinkowski built an academic career as an associate professor of surgery at the University of Kentucky, where she served as chief of breast surgery and medical director of the Comprehensive Breast Cancer Center. She has also served on several national breast cancer committees and is a member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society and Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
But ask her what matters most and her answer isn't about titles or accolades. She wants patients to know that they are working as a team to fight cancer. “I love helping make it not so scary.”
From the moment of diagnosis through recovery and beyond, Dr. Marcinkowski is committed to empowering patients with knowledge and ensuring they feel supported every step of the way. For her, cancer care is about helping patients face the unknown with confidence and hope, knowing they have a dedicated team by their side.
