New paper by the World’s most prominent climate scientists shows rapid acceleration of human-caused warming, with a warming rate now that tracks to near 2.4°C by 2050, far faster than was expected, if it continues. From paper: “We are witnessing the rapid destabilization of the Earth’s climate system. This is no longer a warning for the future; it is a diagnosis of the present. Earth’s life-support systems are being pushed beyond stable limits, with changes unfolding faster than our ability to respond. Human activities are driving profound shifts in the atmosphere, oceans, and biosphere.” Paper Link in replies… H/T @LeonSimons8 …

Satellite data reveal massive scale of routine oil pollution in oceans Oil slicks from ships and offshore oil platforms cover nearly 1.6 million square kilometers (618,000 square miles) of the ocean surface each year, an area slightly larger than the nation of Mongolia. news.mongabay.com/short-arti…

It’s almost like climate change is real.
That's quite an acceleration!! Amd the Mediterranean is warming at a rate of 0.74°C per decade!

"Deforestation is not development. It is self-sabotage on a planetary scale." Every forest cleared for short-term profit steals long-term security from future generations. True progress protects nature; it doesn't erase it.

I’d agree here. We’ve seen a lot of deviant weather/ climate behavior over the past few years. But my honest assessment is: this El Niño is by far the most extreme outlier. If we are being honest, a year ago, could any climate/ weather expert legitimately say that they could conceive of an El Niño so far outside the distribution? I’m genuinely curious? Anyone? Bueller??Because I’ve become accustomed to now “expect the unexpected”. But for this I apparently need to adjust my expectations wayyyyy upward.
Records come and records go. But this is one for the ages. The preliminary Nino 3.4 sea-surface temperature anomaly is now at a record 3.23°C above the 1991-2020 baseline. This crushes the previous daily record set in 1982 by over 1.14°C. The Climate 8-ball is looking up.

Nova Scotia just got a visit from one of the ocean's gentle giants. A basking shark, second only to the whale shark in size... spent Friday evening drifting through Bedford Basin while a crowd gathered to watch. It's a filter feeder, not a threat, and sightings like this are a reminder of why healthy coastal waters matter. Seen a shark you couldn't ID? Tell us! Every sighting adds up.

Go to Mallorca they said. It'll be fun they said. A freak storm hit Valldemossa on Wednesday, bringing gusts of up to 158 km/h (new record for Mallorca). It downed trees, cut power to 17,000, and caused flash floods. This is a prime example of how climate change supercharges our weather. Record-breaking Mediterranean sea temperatures acted as fuel, turning a standard storm front into a violent, destructive event.

I’m always astonished that billionaires would rather ignore the climate crisis and prepare to live in a bunker with dvds and baked beans than devote a modicum of their bottomless wealth to saving the planet where we have fresh fruit and soft grass and blue skies.

This week, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill that will delay necessary protections for North Atlantic right whales, but the fight doesn’t end here. With only around 380 of these gentle giants remaining, the U.S. Senate must stop this bill: oceana.ly/4cYS9Ou
