it’s not that interesting. this is what happens when you don’t try to “win republicans through corporate sanitized moderation”- and instead, tap into the anti billionaire, anti war, anti corruption rage that people are feeling. left populism for winning elections, left deliverism for keeping the resilient coalition.

Twitter beefs are silly but let me respond because there’s a very important point here. And I hope everyone will read this.
You’re right. This is not about me. It’s about a billionaire group @MajorityDems convening top Democrats to shape the party’s agenda — and trying to block reporters from covering the transactions and deals cut inside the room.
I’m the editor of an award-winning news outlet and I am defending my reporters, who are being punished for their widely read reporting on the billionaire funding of @MajorityDems — reporting that has not been factually disputed, and reporting that has been widely cited in other media etc.
What Ilyse represents is a part of the Democratic operative class that is desperate to make clear to billionaires that they will serve them — and defend them — and stoop to Trump-style tactics to do that. That’s how these people make their money. They serve donors. It’s literally their business.
It’s not all Dem operatives but it is some, and they are making clear that they want to control the 2028 primary, and make sure there is no scrutiny of the process.
You can hate me, you can insist like a high schooler that I wasn’t “invited” to your fancy party. But it’s not about me at all. It’s about the attempt to paywall the Democratic presidential primary.
That’s what this is — and @LeverNews will continue to report on that, whether these career operatives like it or not.

A lot of these “moderate” candidates were out there talking like Bernie Sanders. If they had to borrow left wing rhetoric to win then they didn’t really win as a moderate.

It’s a big story that America just registered the largest anti-oligarch, anti-corruption, anti-big tech, pro-change election wave in history, and Dems first response is to run to a conference convened by a tech investor billionaire’s group and to try to reelect the same leaders.

Asked whether he would support Chuck Schumer as Senate Democratic leader if elected, Mississippi Democrat Scott Colom said: “I don’t like that our party is represented by two people that live in the same borough.”
Colom, who was referring to Brooklyn-based Schumer and House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries, is leading Republican incumbent Cindy Hyde-Smith by 49.1% to 48.8%, ~2,500 votes, with 98% of votes counted. The race has not yet been called.

This is required reading for all incoming members of Congress and their staffers.
Why should Congressional Democrats investigate corporate America if their mandate is to deliver real economic change? Because investigations are a key catalyst for securing reform and legislation. For much of the last century, Congress used to be the main institutional player working to secure an economy that serves working people. A key tool was oversight. Lawmakers routinely investigated complex markets and major corporations, identifying problems and exposing wrongdoing. A major goal of these investigations was to learn what was driving certain problems and figure out how to fix them.
After Democrats took back the House during the first Trump administration in 2019, I joined the House Judiciary Committee as a staffer on the Antitrust Subcommittee. Under the terrific leadership of @RepJerryNadler and then-Rep @davidcicilline, we pursued an 18-month investigation into Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google, securing key evidence of how their business practices were undermining competition and harming people, setting the basis for both lawsuits and proposed legislation.
A few lessons from that experience:
1. The quality of legislative oversight depends on the staff and the support of top members to confront power. Committee and Subcommittee Chairs that are focused on getting answers and unafraid to take on powerful corporate interests will make the difference between oversight that doesn’t surrender to their evasion tactics and oversight that aims low or flames out.
Even a relatively small number of dogged, talented lawyers ready to dive in can make a big impact. In the 1930s a single congressional lawyer, Ferdinand Pecora, helped reshape our entire banking system by subpoenaing records and interrogating top financiers, including J.P Morgan. The investigation exposed self-dealing, market manipulation, and tax avoidance, and laid the groundwork for foundational New Deal legislation, including the Glass-Steagall Act and the Securities Exchange Act.
2. Eliminating bottlenecks to moving investigations forward is key. For example, the House should make sure that Subcommittee Chairs can issue subpoenas rather than needing the sign-off of the full Committee or its Chair. A credible threat of sending subpoenas is critical for credible oversight.
3. Ensuring that members can develop the muscle to effectively interrogate CEOs requires investing in real preparation. In the lead up to the hearing with Bezos, Pichai, Cook, and Zuckerberg, the Antitrust Subcommittee spent months reviewing millions of documents collected from the firms, interviewing affected parties, briefing members on key evidence, and conducting practice hearings. Members came into the hearing deeply informed and able to rebut and call out CEO dissembling. The result was some of the most effective member questioning of executives we’ve seen in decades. @TheProspect wrote up a great overview: prospect.org/2020/07/30/triu…
4. For decades, institutional capacity in Congress has been extremely weak. Much of this traces back to the Gingrich Revolution, which was effectively the 1995 DOGE-ing of Congress. Republican leadership fired over 600 professional staffers, eliminated the Office of Technology Assessment, and gutted research capacity. None of that capacity was ever meaningfully restored.
As a result, members have way fewer resources to develop serious expertise or go deep on a new topic. Members should start rebuilding that capacity so the institution can fully play its Article I role, where Congress can again do serious policy development and legislating and serve as a real check on the executive and judicial branches.
5. AI markets should be high on the list of investigations. The business decisions of the major AI firms have huge public ramifications, yet the public is at a severe informational disadvantage when it comes to how these markets work and the choices these firms are making. A congressional investigation will help ensure future legislative action is based on a more complete view of what is going on rather than selective and partial corporate disclosures.

In a democracy where representatives actually work for their voters it would already be over for Jeffries
Axios: House Democrats "inundated" with anti-Jeffries calls
Democratic House members and members-elect are being bombarded with phone calls and emails urging them not to elect Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) as speaker, more than a dozen lawmakers and aides tell Axios.
An incoming House Democrat told Axios they are "getting inundated" and have received "about 150" calls since the election urging them not to vote for Jeffries.

🇨🇺 Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced new sanctions on Cuba on Thursday, targeting its “crude oil shipping network,” state-owned entities and China-based companies accused of supplying Cuba’s military. The administration also cleared the way for sanctions on foreign businesses operating in Cuba’s electronics, manufacturing, marine and technology sectors.
Rubio defended the move by accusing Cuban military officials and “regime insiders” of profiting from “opaque offshore networks.” He also reiterated the unsubstantiated claim that Cuba is “a staging ground for a global coalition of hostile anti-American actors” and declared that Washington “will not stand by” while the Cuban government directs resources to its military elite.
The sanctions deepen Washington’s economic strangulation of Cuba as its civilian population struggles with prolonged blackouts, fuel shortages and a worsening humanitarian crisis. Having already sought to choke off oil supplies to the island, the Trump administration is now targeting the shipping networks carrying petroleum to and from Cuba, including five vessels.

Right now, the Senate parliamentarian remains the one who blocked Dems' min wage.

Scores of trucks carrying new tents and caravans (mobile homes) have been waiting at Gaza's border for more than a year, but Israel has blocked them from entering despite a US-brokered and monitored ceasefire.
Israel’s deliberate and systematic cruelty to deprive displaced Palestinians of shelter and compound their suffering is part of an effort to drive Palestinians out of Gaza, and is continuing with full U.S. support.

🇵🇸 "We're extremely, extremely afraid of winter,” Mohammed Zayed told Drop Site earlier this week. Pointing to the tarps strung around his tent on the beach west of Gaza City, he said, “All of this is just an illusion. All of this will be blown away,"
On Friday, heavy rain flooded tent camps across Gaza, soaking families' belongings.
Like most tents in Gaza, Zayed's tent is three years old and falling apart. A tarp now costs up to 200 shekels, about $64. "Where am I supposed to get that money?" asked Khalda Ghattas, a mother living in a tent at Gaza's port. "We have nothing."
In Jabaliya, Mohammed Al-Shabrawi shelters in his bombed family home. "There isn't a single part of it that doesn't leak,” he told @AbdSabbah91.
Over the past three winters, Palestinians in Gaza, many of them infants, have died of hypothermia, including 11 children last winter. Israel continues to block mobile homes and reconstruction materials and restricts tents, in violation of the ceasefire.

مجرد البقاء ليس «تعافياً» | Survival is NOT Recovery
In Gaza, daily struggles to survive are being reframed in international narratives as “recovery.” But what recovery are we talking about?
Recovery is not commercial snacks on market shelves at unaffordable prices while a patient searches in vain for a cardiac stent or sight-saving surgery.
Recovery is not a tent leaking under the rain, blocked solar panels, or destroyed homes waiting for construction materials stuck behind closed borders.
Real recovery means functioning hospitals, safe classrooms for children, and accessible medical care.
When people are stripped of basic human rights and expected to view mere breathing as an achievement, genocide continues in silence.
Stop disguising reality. Gaza needs open crossings, an immediate end to the violence, and a dignified shelter.
