A better summation could not be written.
We don't know this man, Doug Whitley, but he's definitely an American hero for writing this excellent letter-to-the-editor.

"I had dinner with Mickey Mantle one night.
It was in January in New York, and it was really cold.
We were walking back to the Regency Hotel, where we both were staying, and I had noticed that Mickey had asked for a doggie bag for his dinner in the restaurant;
Which was sort of strange.
Anyway, Mickey asks me to take a walk with him.
Now this wasn't the kind of night where you wanted to take a stroll, but I went along, over to Madison Avenue, where he knew this homeless guy who was in a cardboard box.
Mickey Mantle knocks on the cardboard and suddenly this guy pops up his head.
He looks frightened--and frightening--not knowing who's there, and suddenly when he sees us, the guy's face softens.
He says:
"Oh, hi, Mick."
And Mantle hands him his dinner.
It was clear to me he had done this many times before.
Did it mean that Mickey Mantle was the greatest humanitarian in the world?
No, just that that was part of him, just as an hour later he could have been drunk in a bar and told some very nice autograph seeker to go f*** himself."

"He inspired awe without envy.....
Except perhaps for what he got away with."

Bill Clinton: “I’m tired of the way we treat our allies like dirt. And just last week, President Trump finally did what he threatened to do when he first ran, which is to abandon Ukraine and embrace Vladimir Putin all over again.”
I hope the American people are also tired of it

Happy heavenly birthday to Mickey Mantle. Born OTD in 1931.
Look at that perfect swing.

BREAKING: Billionaire Sir Richard Branson unleashes a SCORCHING attack on Trump and his disgusting cozying up to Russian dictator Vladimir Putin.
This is EXACTLY the kind of thing that gets under Trump's skin...
"I thought I’d never have to say this in my lifetime, but this is 2026, and sadly nothing is what it used to be," Branson, the founder of Virgin Group, wrote on LinkedIn. "The Trump administration has become an appeaser to autocrats and dictators, putting their personal whims before the best interests of the American people and those of the free world. What is it about Putin that President Trump fawns over?"
"How will America’s allies ever be able to trust this administration again when they are now turning against them at a time of war and suffering?" he asked.
Trump has repeatedly betrayed our Ukrainian allies in recent days. First, he announced a stunning deal with Putin to allow millions of barrels of diesel into the global markets, a move that will directly pump money into the Russian war machine. Then, he began a concerted smear campaign against President Zelenskyy and said that Putin is easier to deal with.
The backstabbing escalated when Washington failed to provide its usual early warning to Kyiv of an incoming Russian ballistic missile attack. Now, it appears that the White House ordered a temporary disruption of Starshield, a military version of Elon Musk's Starlink that the Ukrainian armed forces rely upon.
"The slowdown of Starlink/Starshield and the inexplicable lack of advance warning of Russian missile launches have already caused Ukrainian civilians to die unnecessarily," wrote Branson. "How much worse can it get?"
"If one thing is clear it’s that European leaders must overcome the initial shock about Trump’s recent actions and step up to the plate. It’s as much about Europe’s freedom as it is about Ukraine’s sovereignty. Both are worth fighting for," he continued. "All options should be on the table now, from the transfer of frozen Russian assets to Ukraine to the delivery of advanced weapons systems such as Germany’s Taurus."
"Why oh why is this happening? We cannot let the free world be dismantled before our very eyes," Branson concluded.
We couldn't agree more. Trump is an enemy to Ukraine, an enemy to democracy, and an enemy to the American people. When Democrats retake power, we have our work cut out for us. Every last trace of this monstrous man's legacy must be erased.
Please ❤️ and share if you think that Trump is Putin's puppet!

Paul Foytack put a fastball right over plate that Mickey Mantle destroyed, effortlessly clearing Right Field roof at Tiger Stadium, crossed Trumbull Avenue and landed at the base of a shed in the Brooks Lumberyard across from the ballpark in 1960.
"It turns out that the story of Mickey's historic drive was well known at Brooks Lumber.
Paul Borders, a Brooks employee, saw exactly where the ball landed.
Dr. Susman and fellow researcher Robert Schiewe calculated the distance through Schiewe's use of the Pythagorean Theorem.
The result was a prodigious 643 feet.
This is the longest home run to have actually been measured from the point it was hit to the point at which it landed.
Although it was measured after the fact, the point of impact was well-known and we believe this distance to be completely reliable.
This is no computer estimate.
This is the distance the ball travelled in the air from home plate to the place where it
landed.
The "Guinness Book of Sports Records" notes it as the longest home run in a major league game to be measured:
"After the fact."
It is the longest home run ever hit in a major league game where it was possible to get the exact measurement."
"Explosion!"

On this day in 2006 Charlotte 49er football was born at a Hickory Tavern on Harris Blvd.
Don’t believe the stories. It wasn’t a big donor that made it happen and it sure as hell was not AD Judy Rose who actively attempted to undercut us. It was handful of then young alumni and students that believed we could make a difference.
We can and we did. The Charlotte Football Initiative is where it all started.
With all of that said - if I had known where college sports were headed not sure I would have been such an advocate for adding it.

Lou Gehrig discussed Babe Ruth's called shot on an NBC radio broadcast on October 6, 1932, only five days after the World Series game at Wrigley.
The recording then went unheard for roughly 88 years before author Dan Joseph surfaced it in 2020.
It is the only known audio of Gehrig discussing the called shot.
That combination of timing and rediscovery makes the recording unusually valuable evidence in one of baseball's oldest debates.
Sorry to see that former NC State hoopster Cozell McQueen as passed. I used to love interviewing him. During his freshman year, I asked the South Carolina native why he picked NC State. He said, "I always wanted to go to school in the north."
The Observer's @scott_fowler had an excellent story about Patriots' QB Drake Maye and his family (they are from the Charlotte area) this morning. A special family and a special piece.

No Secret Service Protective Detail would EVER have allowed Donald Trump to stop on stage to throw his fist in the air and chant "Fight, fight, fight!" in a legitimate assassination attempt.
I have spoken to former Secret Service members, one of them I've known for almost twenty years. They told me, "In that situation, what the protectee wants to do is irrelevant. The protective detail is running the show."
