So many people taking about "writing for the love of the game" as if that's at all sustainable for a fan COMMUNITY. It's 100% understandable to be sad that you're getting locked out of conversations and treated like a Content Producer instead of a fellow fan to yap with.

Guys, why are y'all so concerned about AO3 getting banned? Aren't you the ones constantly taking fanfic out of the one safe space built to host it and publishing it elsewhere? Deal with the consequences

Replying to @pissingmeself
yeah so when i post art, it comes with a right click save feature. yet i still ask that people do not repost my art. if someone reposts my art and then says "well you gave me permission by uploading this in public" would you not think they were being a bit rude?

???
I use someone’s else IP to draw fanarts too, but the fanarts stay mine and in a lot of countries this is protected by parody’s laws??
Writing is art as much as drawing is.
Ao3 even states that fanfiction writers actually OWN fanfictions copyrights
you cannot make this argument for fanfiction because you are using someone else's ip to write the said fic

If a writer doesn’t want their work redistributed, just don’t do it and fucking respect that. What the hell is wrong with people? The lack of basic decency and respect just…

i defend creators work because anyone who dedicates time to creating deserves defending. especially in the time of AI prominence.

second take of the day: this entire Ao3/fanfic discourse is literally just people confusing personal boundaries with gatekeeping.
pro-piracy advocacy is about fighting the gatekeeping of culture and knowledge. dismissing a writer's (worker's) wishes is pro-consumerist.

GUYS!!
If you want to go to the nostalgia rabbit hole of pre-canon SasuSaku fics, go ask for the e-book!
It's a TREASURE!
PS : I've drawn one of three alternative cover!
in light of the ao3 downtime, a fractured fairytales : a sasusaku au anthology pdf copy is available for free. just ask [email protected] for a copy! ❤️

Tl;dr: community involves all parties, and I’m really tired of seeing so many readers talk about how fandom is community driven when you guys don’t treat writers as a part of that community. Writers are not upset about credit, they’re upset about being reduced to content.

"But it's a public website!" So are art portfolios, photography websites, and countless other places where creators share their work. Publicly accessible doesn't mean public domain. The internet being able to access something doesn't mean the internet owns it.

people want to be respected for their hardwork, it’s not that hard to grasp. how do you respect anyone who has put in HOURS to do something by telling them it’s no longer their work once it’s released to the internet and to just deal with it?

i think if a fic author tells you they’re not comfortable with the work they spent hours and days working on being shared on platforms they didn’t agree too the least u can do is shut up and respect their opinion idk

It’s funny to see the double standard applied to fanfic writers. Reposting and sharing fanfic works is somehow acceptable and even enforced right now, whereas reposting someone’s artwork is akin to burning them at the stake. Make it make sense… it’s still someone’s creation

“you give permission to download your fics when you post them publicly” i mean. i post my art on twitter where ppl can download it but that doesn’t mean i want it reposted by ppl i don’t know. it’s the same principle; you don’t own something just bc it was free.

again if we were talking about an illustration each and everyone of you would have been blasted by the community
don't be hypocrites

but what about the common sense of letting the owner of the product choose what to do of their story?
you don't pay for any of them, they are not some company products and you should not treat fics like some content created with the sole purpose to be consumed by an audience 3/3

BUT are insulting writers right now for speaking up on how their works are being used without their consent
I saw so many poor excuses on why it's ok to distribute someone else story without them knowing (they don't have copyrights, preserving stories, the download button)
