GPT-Rosalind surfaced a new lead for drug discovery: could restoring cholesterol transport protect neurons from degeneration? DCTN1 is a gene linked to Perry syndrome, a rare neurodegenerative disorder. In mouse-brain data, disrupting it increased expression of genes involved in making cholesterol. GPT-Rosalind suggested a possible explanation: cholesterol may not be reaching where neurons need it. That gives scientists a specific mechanism to test and, if confirmed, a direction for developing new treatments for neurodegenerative disorders. With @perturbai_tx and @scrippsresearch, a team of thousands of GPT-Rosalind agents worked in parallel, connecting gene-expression results from millions of mouse brain cells with scientific literature in just 32 minutes. We’re now expanding this collaboration to identify new drug targets. openai.com/index/scaling-ai-…

i'm so bullish on openai rosalind in contrast to anthropic's attempt to do novel research from scratch which hits real-world friction in wet labs, focusing on finding and expanding existing sources of data, plus collaborating with existing pharma companies, seems much better

OpenAI just deployed thousands of GPT-Rosalind agents to analyze data from millions of mouse brain cells in just 32 minutes. Working with PerturbAI and Scripps Research, the agents independently analyzed gene perturbations, searched scientific literature, and generated testable biological hypotheses. The distributed approach cited 700+ papers, compared with just 11 for a single agent. Human experts preferred its reports 75% of the time. Among the findings: new research leads involving neurodegeneration and cholesterol metabolism. From analyzing data to identifying the next experiment worth doing. 🔗 openai.com/index/scaling-ai-…

Not only is this idea old, I’ve seen it in department seminar. Monkeying with lipid transport is almost as old as the field itself. It didn’t exactly escape notice that the most well known risk factor for AD is a lipid/cholesterol transport molecule…

The AI bros remind me a lot of the Elizabeth Holmes debacle. They have an elementary understanding of how biology works and they think that they are the only geniuses in the room who see a gap that nobody else did. Then they actually try to do it and, as it turns out, most mechanistic explanations are wrong or misleading and in the end biology is driven by actual physical experimentation culminating in actual human trials. Your computer friend found a possible new mechanism? Cool, get in line behind literally millions of other untested but promising-sounding ideas at every lab in the country.
