We closed the 2025 campaign the best way.
By bringing the Open Source community in Nsukka together for the first time.
This was TAKEOFF, OpenSourceNest's inaugural event. Big shout out to @github and @GitHubEducation

You don't write code. So open source has nothing to do with you?
Not so fast 🚷
It has a lot to do.
From building your career to creating products and exploring AI, open source has more to offer than you might think.
And no, you don't need to be a developer to get started.
Imagine you shared your jollof rice recipe with the entire world and invited everyone to try it, improve it, and share their own versions.
That's the idea behind open source.
Curious about how it works? Watch this and follow us for more.

Happy New Month 💚
May this month be brilliant, not because of one bright idea, but because we keep bringing our small sparks together. The ecosystem gets brighter when we do.
With love,

I'm building gmsg — a git commit message generator
Ever had a time you worked on something but you were too lazy to draft a commit message for some obscure bug so you just wrote:
"Did something"
Well gmsg can help you draft precise messages based on your staged files diffs.

Not many would under the joy I feel but I’m really glad I attended TakeOff by @OpenSourceNest . I was so happy to see @jetbrains as a partner and I took a shot at asking about my pycharm license and after two years I am back to Python and Grateful 🤩🔥🔥🔥

We’re still not over the magic that went down at TAKEOFF by @OpenSourceNest 🔥
Here’s a 30-second recap. 🤭
On April 11th, we showed up at TAKEOFF by @Opensourcenest - their Annual gathering for reflecting on the year behind, setting direction for the one ahead and bringing the open source community into one room.
And then room had energy from start to finish!
Here's a recap of all that went down!
🧵 1/3
State of Open Source (Nest) with the convener of TAKEOFF.
Our co-founder, @onfranciis took the stage for one final session at TAKEOFF to account for a campaign year of building Open Source Nest.
In the last campaign year (Aug - Dec), OpenSourceNest:
🔥Delivered 4 hands-on beginner workshops covering GitHub basics, code, technical writing, and design
🔥Reached 580+ participants and helped hundreds take their first steps in open source
🔥Co-hosted a vibrant in-person Contribute-a-thon with @mozilla Common Voice with 40+ attendees recorded 1,077 voice clips and validated 826 tangible contributions to public datasets.
🔥Spoken at 6 external tech events and grown to 450+ engaged members
And that was just year one, closing off the 2025 campaign with TAKEOFF, with 200+ registrations, backed by GitHub.
What we built in 2025 was the beginning of OSN.
The 2026 campaign is already in motion and YOU are already in our plans.
What do you think we should prioritize this year?

MINI RECAP: What Happened at TAKEOFF by Open Source Nest?
TAKEOFF took off with the kind of energy that spells community. Starting high with colorful introductions that set the fun tone for everything that followed.
With the idealisation of open source as a tool for democratizing tech, Precious anchored the mission; walking us through the transition from User to Contributor.
That energy stayed afloat and got practical with Romanus breaking down exactly how to turn open source contribution into paid opportunity.
The victor they say writes history , but not anymore. History is now being rewritten by what AI is trained on. "AI has become the arbiter of truth. If Africans don't show up to shape that data, someone else will." — Kingsley Nworie.
In real time, the African tech ecosystem was laid bare.
The untapped 'NOs' reframed as advantages, the challenges named without filter, the numerous opportunities mapped out loud.
Ending with the charge that cut through everything:
Go home. Do something with what you learned TODAY!
TAKEOFF reminded everyone that the best communities don't just think together, they play together.
From a random scavenger game to a Spongebob and Merlin voice acting studio...
All proof that techies can be so much fun as techies.
Conversations that started at the icebreaker were still going long after the event wrapped.
TAKEOFF didn't just happen. It launched.

The future of open source in Africa won't be defined by possibility. It will be defined by how well opportunities, challenges, and actions align.
It was the core idea of the panelists at TAKEOFF.
Our host, @Limitless_Mmeso, guided the panelists into unpacking what that alignment really looks like in practice.
@Yahamarachukwu on how to overcome one of the biggest contributors challenge –self doubt.
"You can only overcome internalized self- doubt just by doing it."
The doubt will always be there. It's what you chose to do regardless.
But mindset alone doesn't build ecosystems, it takes structure.
@trulynedum when asked what one project he would design to accelerate open source in Africa didn't hesitate.
"A Paid African Open Source Fellowship."
Where contributors get paid to contribute for a period of time.
To him, Africa's talent is not the problem.
The problem is that there exist few opportunities and resources to nurture it.
And as we earlier established, it takes the alignment of all three to successful build a future for open source in Africa.
So, what is the Action plan for aspiring contributor?
According to @theKingslee, it begins with identity.
📌 Decide you are someone that contributes — that's your why.
📌 From there, target good first issues.
📌 Then plug into community, specifically the GitHub Student Exchange.
The path has always been there, TAKEOFF made it visible.
Now the next move is yours.
Follow OpenSourceNest and don't just watch open source happen.

We have given the power of truth to AI...but who is shaping the truth we see?
At TAKEOFF, @theKingslee opened a conversation we've avoided for too long.
AI is no longer just a tool.
It is becoming the arbiter of truth.
What we see, what we learn, what we believe.
But the problem is
Over 54% of workers globally use AI and in Africa, that number rises to 64%.
Yet the systems we rely on are largely built and trained outside our context.
So what happens when others write our narratives?
We get dominant perspectives that don't reflect us. Cultural misrepresentation. The quiet erasure of indigenous knowledge.
If AI is shaping the future, Africa cannot just be users.
We have to be builders, owners, and contributors.
So what do we do?
→ Own our data –> our stories, our realities, our truth
→ Get involved –> build, don't just consume
→ Push for compute independence –> control the infrastructure behind the intelligence
Because if we don't shape AI, AI will shape us.
"History is no longer written by the victor. It is what is trained into AI."
— Kingsley Nworie at TAKEOFF 🔥
