PDX Coin

When @Ramon_Pablo23, a friend from the @BoredApeYC and @MagicCityApes, presented me with a unique challenge involving PDX Coin, it was the start of an intriguing project. They launched PDX in 2021, minting 5 billion tokens, but 4.5 billion tokens were dormant in the developer wallet and needed to be burned. The catch? The smart contract had no burn function. Exploring the contract, I discovered the eoriginal developers had not only implemented the ERC721 standard themselves but also created a custom proxy upgrade pattern and their own version of the Ownable library. This was going to be interesting. The proxy upgrade pattern was a game-changer here. It separated data, like token balances, from implementations, such as transfers and, crucially, the new burn function we needed. But how we executed this mattered - the blockchain's story had to reflect our intentions responsibly. After discussing various approaches with the client, we decided against direct burning from the developer's wallet. That method might imply tokens could be arbitrarily removed, which wasn't the story we wanted to tell. Our chosen path was more intricate but ethically sound. We had the developer wallet transfer all tokens to the deployer wallet. Then, I deployed a new token implementation contract, directed the proxy to this new version, and executed the burn. The total supply elegantly dropped to the intended 500 million. Crafting the burn function was a blend of technical skill and creative problem-solving. It’s similar to a mint function but in reverse - remove tokens, adjust the total supply, and show the transfer to the zero address. But the real challenge was ensuring the safety of active tokens in wallets and exchanges during the process. Testing was crucial. I used Ganache to fork the mainnet blockchain, simulating every step with precision. I could even unlock the developer's wallet and major holders for comprehensive testing, all without their private keys. When the time came to go live, with the client on call, it was a heart-pounding experience. Successfully executing such a delicate operation and seeing the immediate impact was a reminder of why I love programming for the EVM. Almost feels like I’m working with the code of the Matrix.
