Trump is banning students majoring in degrees that don’t make enough money from taking out college loans. Degrees for social work, art, religious studies, teaching aides, and music will be hit the hardest. trib.al/NmmAzhf

It's important to learn math not because you may need to do long division as an adult, but because it promotes rigorous thinking. IMO, history and causal inference are among the most important subjects a young person can study — math being central to the second. A significant problem in public discourse right now is people's inability to critically evaluate causal claims (e.g., vaccines cause autism, deporting immigrants will solve the housing crisis, etc.). The less able people are to critically evaluate causal claims, the worse our democracy functions because people can be preyed upon for votes. You should promote anything that improves rigorous thinking, even if it doesn't have market value. In fact, we should stop thinking of education only in the context of what improves the economy. IMO, this is distinct from knowing your own address (which Huang can avoid because he's wealthy). Memorizing facts like this may or may not be important, but it's distinct from rigorous thinking.
HUANG: “.. Try getting a kid to do long division right now. Multiplication tables are starting to be forgotten. Doing square roots? My goodness. .. .. Does it matter? .. I don’t think it does.” @ezraklein @JensenHuang

This was only 3 years ago. It’s truly astounding. Parents need to stop advocating for good grades, and start advocating for a good education. If you’re in Calculus and don’t know how to factor, but you got an A in algebra, your whole education system failed you.

it isn’t that kids should be awed by adults or ‘seen and not heard’ as in older gens, but they should have been taught how to exist in public without being grabby and entitled and rude and without expecting every stranger to allow it - that is basic parenting!

kids actually need to know: 1) the way they behave at home is not the same way they should behave in public 2) not everything in the world belongs to them 3) adults in public spaces don’t fulfil the same role in their lives as parents/teachers do

No surprise there since horror movies are not suited to repeat viewings and hardly anybody who watched Scary Movie liked it, though sadly they still paid to see the damned thing. Meanwhile, Masters of the Universe has positive word of mouth.
On Sunday, Masters of the Universe made MORE than Backrooms AND Scary Movie... with LESS theaters Something is happening!

I have a thread.
I’ve been thinking about this all day. A man on a Paris-Boston flight, suffered a “hemorrhage,” & no one cleaned up the blood & diarrhea. Passengers on other flights “brought the fluids home.” Hemorrhagic viruses aren’t mentioned at all. Carry on. cnn.com/travel/airline-passe…

The ending was the perfect culmination of what the film was building up to: distrust, uncertainty, paranoia, and an inescapable fate beyond which the two survivors will never know the outcome. An audacious and unappreciated climax for a film that had to marinate in the zeitgeist.
The Thing is a brilliant story for many reasons but part of its power is its ambiguous ending: by the time the end credits hit, we never really know if MacReady or Childs is infected. It forces you to think about the film long after you’ve finished. Storytelling at its best.

Nowhere are NBC News’ findings more striking than St. Louis. The rate of children starting kindergarten in the St. Louis area who are fully vaccinated has plummeted from 91.6% during the 2010-11 school year to 75.9% in 2024-2025. "We're just in a waiting phase before measles comes and rocks the state of Missouri," a head nurse at the Premier Charter School in St. Louis says.
